Agrred. No Models whatsoever.

The room is so small anyway, none of us should have a problem with r_speeds. IMHO, the greatest advantage of using models, is they keep your w_polys down, which always seems to be a problem for me. Don't get me wrong, there are many other advantages and reasons for using them, but that, to me, is the most important.

I started the thing already. SHould be pronounce our ideas in order not to have the same confusion as last time?
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-28 05:19:06 UTC Post #69978
PTS, sent you those pics.

1. Room size is no more than 400 X 320 height is 256
2. Custom textures, sprites and sounds allowed
3. No models
4. The room doesn't have to represent a box
5. wpoly maximum of 1500

Something very important! We forgot to mention about the outside area. Does it count for the room size or is it juist outside? This gives alot of oportunities...
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-28 05:33:06 UTC Post #69984
The outer edges of the map, are the 400x320x256, anything over taht and it's a disqualification.

And I'm actually pretty pissed off with the model thing, if you seriously only don't want models because they lower your r_speeds, and you think we've got enough to work with... I find it petty, and selfish that you don't consider taht other mappers (ie: me) use models alot and have experience in makign a map come to life with them, but whatever.

We should have to use our entries from the last compo somewhere in this one :D

PS: models are your friend. you f**ks.
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-28 05:46:53 UTC Post #69992
Well... It seems like no matter how many rules we elect there'll always be a way to avoid ccertain problems like the size. If you work miniaturized you can make a whole city in such a box. Or (as in my case) split it up in 3 rooms to reduce r_speeds and make it more complex. The question is do we need a room or just a map that big?

I'm getting annoying, am I? :)
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-28 06:44:55 UTC Post #70007
The map has to be to scale, so a player can walk around in it.

The dimensions are the very outer edge of the map, what's inside is up to you.

And yes, you are getting annoying, only from the models arguement, it all seems pretty petty to me.
I don't see a reason for not having any models, and the only arguements you've proposed are flawed and don't really stand up against the positives that a model will bring to the map.

Saying taht, I might just use models anyway, if you don't wanna use 'em, that's fine.

I might not even have to, I just don't like being told I can't.

Fine.

I just recenlty found this unfinished map in my archive and I think it has some value.

I'll check it later, what is it?

I don't think anyone disagrees that models are useful and important. If we agree to use them though, it changes the competiton. What we really need is to decide what we really want to get out of this compo.

Or, maybe it would be better that for each subcompo only one person makes the conditions. Just a thought.

PaLO: An old version of my 'Hacking HL'. I decided to dump the elevator and the hologram.

rowleybob: Best idea ever! Let's the winner from the last compo chooses the rules for the next.

Zoner's compile tools doesn't render the outside walls so they can be as big as you'd like 'em to be, right?
Posted 20 years ago2004-10-29 13:04:09 UTC Post #70449
Right, but those inside dimensions have to be no larger than 400x320x256.

You shouldn't have to have massive outside walls, unless you're intending on using them as scenery, then they would count as part of the inside..

And no camera trickery, it must all be to scale please :D

That was me, btw. I think I'm not going to win this time, since I'm gonna make it before the deadline.

How do you mean?

I made my last entry, well finished it, 5 minutes before 9pm, IIRC, it was close anyway.. lol

I had my folks shouting at me for sitting on teh pc while my mate was waiting at the door, and fucking music was blaring, food was gettign cooked, it was like a warzone!

I'm surprised I even made it in at all :P

Yes, but a simple prefab with no entities is much easier to be made. It doesn't require any complicated multi_managers and env_renders. I've spent years of 3D modeling and this map based stuff is just an easy task for me. You can't imagine what efforts I put into my hacker map with all these stuff (about 100 just for the computers).

I can only give my congratulations to the winner of this one (whoever he is). Due to some technical issues (traveling) I won't have access to my computer in the next 4 days (this reminds me I should onbtain a notebook soon).

I guess you guys have watched 'Pitch Black' starring Vin Diesel. Well, my idea was to recreate the intro scene, where the ship is struk by tiny bullet-like asteroids and start descending toward the planet. You wake up in the crio cells and go to the control room. From the pilot seat you watch trough the windshield how the ship crashes (mainly sprite based). So far I've only finished the crio cells and the control room. Detail is minimal (only some ambient, textures and lightning) and the crash scene will take ages to finish (more than 30mins and thats all I have before dinner and sleeptime).

That was a great movie, well at least a great scene, when the ship is plummeting through the atmosphere.

Interesting, shouldn't this thing be finished already? I mean the deadline was tuesday 9pm GMT?

This one is wed 9pm GMT, if i'm not mistaken.

Uploadin' mines now. It's totally unfinished, but I think it's a good start. This is what the rooms look like where I work. Might finish this and use for compo 12, 'cause my original Idea is turning out to be tough to do in the time allotted.
Posted 20 years ago2004-11-03 18:39:33 UTC Post #71351
That was a great movie,
are you seriously trying to suggest that a film starring vin diesel can reach the category of "great". even "remotely okay"? bah. mock me not!

:)

Since no-one seems to be finished, what'dya think of extended the deadline to some time Monday? That way you have a few more days including the weekend to work on it.

I think it'd be fine...

I'm down with that, I've had other thigns to take care of, so I haven;t been able to spend enough time on this.

PTS, how are you making all that shit in a 400x320x256 room lol?

PaLO:Yes, you start on the lower floor, then out the corridor in the elevator and then in the control room and when you sit in the pilot seat the particle shield opens and the show starts. It's actually three rooms but as I said you can always go around the rulles :)

[quote]The map doesn't have to represent a box[quote]

Why do you think I gave this one? I had such an idea from the very beginning.

Maybe we can revive this after the deadline for Compo 12, as it usually takes quite a while for judging finish up.
