Why is there even an age limit on the competition? Those bastardly lawyers! Some of the best mapping talents are under 18. If they leave mapping only to old geezers like me, the vaults would be full of crap intead of the beauties we have here.

You don't necessarily have to be 18 - You could have purchased it retail. Gaming stores like EB don't run checks on IDs for M rated games. You would technically have to be 18 to purchase it with a credit card via Steam, however, unless you get your parents to get it for you or something.

You could probably enter it in your parents' name if you're under 18, with their permission of course.

I'd think that the '18+' rule is mainly in place to prevent small, annoying kids for entering n00bish maps that obviously won't win - Older mappers usually = more mature, and know more about what would and wouldn't get accepted and thus they won't get flooded with 'omgz killbox' maps.

It's only a 15-rated game over here :|

Also, this is a duplicate thread?

Well, it's technically 17+ here but anyone can really buy it, only gigantic chain stores like Wal-Mart or Target actually ask for your ID.

It's not a duplicate thread.

Heck, I'm 14, and I bought it without being told a thing about my age.

And that is homo if you have to be over 18 to enter. Even though I don't stand a chance, I'd like to enter anyway.

No harm in a little hope is there?

Yes it is, there was already a thread about this competition. In fact, I thought you started it!

I started a thread about the HL2DM/SDK release and mentioned the compo in it.

I fear what signals this will send to the community, or rather some parts of the community. Mapping is supposed to be an art, you know.

No it's not, it's about gameplay and having a good time playing the map.

I'm gonna make my best map ever for this compo. This time it wont be a 5 day project like some of my maps in the vault. It's gonna be something special, and gameplay/layout cant be overlooked

Placing a trial run in the Vault is publishing,...

There wont be a trial run of my contest map in the vault... you'll just have to wait to get it in a February STEAM update if I win, hehehe
I still cant play HL2, CS:S or HL2DM because of my dvd drive.
Can anyone that's played HL2DM tell me what is the thing they like the most about it?
I've been looking at the example vmf dm_lockdown, mapping has changed a lot... full of prop_statics and env_cubemaps... :
Posted 19 years ago2004-12-05 08:38:29 UTC Post #76390
you gotta love those env_cubemaps!!! and yeh i think the best bit about hl2dm is the fact that you can shoot with gravity gun! and whats funny is that you can shoot say explosive barrels at people!

noobs sometimes hold explosive cans in front of them with gravity gun and most people just shoot the can in front of him so he died :P

there will be great maps to come from people (cough rabid) which will use the physics well he he (shooting a wooden support and the roof falls down)

The cool thing on dm_lockdown is that theres a plug on the floor which you can pick upwith gravity gun and place in the socket near it! This triggers the fan in the vent to go on and kills anyone inside the vent!

Inside the vent are rpgs and ammo so thats why people go in there :)

So strategic weapon placement is still important...
When making the map for the compo, we have to remember that the placing of weapons and spawn points dictates how the gameplay will flow. It's not just about the layout or architecture.
If you guys remember the area in front of the Crossfire bunker in HLDM, there were no spawn points. That made it a less visited place, and players only went through it to get into the bunker, press a little button and we know the rest... BOOM
