Is the next compo going to be on HL2 maps instead of HL1?

I'm practicing making HL2 maps, so I don't make HL1 maps anymore.

I imagine it will be HL1 and would support it remaining so.

Entirely up to Andy i guess - since Atom is .. elseware

I think the compos should stay HL1 based - after all, this was and still is a Half-Life 1 Mapping site?
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-05 15:11:13 UTC Post #76471
I heard that it was going to be HL1.
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-05 15:23:34 UTC Post #76473
I hope it will be HL1.

I think we would see better maps if the next compo is for HL1, since everyone is basically n00bs when it comes to HL2 mapping (with the exception of Rabid ;) )

And, Some people are unable to play HL2, it's not fair to shut them out.

Yeah, like me. REMAIN HL1

so very true there and its a shame that a lot of people cant use hl2 on their computers due to errors

but it would be cooler as noobs would have a chance of wining if everyone is new to hl2 mapping but i have had lots of experience with it on hl2 but css still is new to me! damn skies

Who says we're all newbies at HL2 mapping? It's not much different, really. Think HL1 with more detail and higher poly limits :) Petrol was HL2, yknow.

The main completely-new stuff in Source is the entities, I reckon. This is from a mapper who has played one sole map of his own so far (work, work, work :().

yes i saw the examples and i must say its going to take a while for new people to get used to!

That ragdoll restraint is odd to me!

Most of the new entities like the phys_ ones and the ropes are actually very simple to use, it just takes a bit of practice.

The logic_ entities are where it gets a bit more tricky ;)

logic yeh what do they do exactly as theres not many guides around at the moment!

im just getting used to the making terrain tool which is cool as i can make detailed mountains and grass

also can you make cameras on css like on hl2 with the tv monitor texture

The terrain tool is great - Subdivide is my fav.

Logic entities are things like timers, autosaves...sort of like some of the game_ entities from HL1. You can also do things with some standard base-level logic entities like 'branch' and 'case' if you're really advanced, which are useful for scripting things and setting up sequences.

Yeah phys and prop entities are ez

Maybe we could have a HL1 and HL2 contest at once.
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-07 16:38:05 UTC Post #76827
No, because then some people might enter both compos, or the HL1 compo might get completely ignored :(

Yeah, that might happen... :zonked:

HL1 forever!!!

I finally caved and bought it, but i wish i'd not.

I hate HL2 for some very good reasons:

1. Runs like crap on my computer with all settings at there lowest, and still takes like 5 minutes to load up and like 2 minutes between maps.

2. 4.5 megs WTF!!!!??!! I had to delete all kinds of porn to fit it on my machine.

3. You're restricted to playing the game with cd in-tray---shitty...

and...(flamers get ready)...

4. Nope, I won't even say it.
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-08 08:38:33 UTC Post #76967
Wow, CS loving lamer alert.

And I don't think it's 4.5 megs somehow.

Yes, I read the minimum requirements and knew it would probably run shitty anyway, but the need to try HL2 was overwhelming. Saying I hate HL2 was not correct, I'm merely lamenting that I have to spend 2K+ to buy a decent enough laptop to run it--i refuse to deal in desktops anymore. I'm looking at an HP with a GeForce FX Go5700. Should handle it, I hope.

As Anon said:
Some new games require hardware updates... that's why system specs can be found on game boxes...
If you knew it wouldn't run well, why buy it? And even if you couldn't resist buying it, why complain it didn't run well, even though you knew it wouldn't? There is a thing called a "No-CD crack." Not sure if there is one for HL2 yet though. I'd say there is.

Ya, I really shouldn't have. And I was more complaining that I would have to buy another machine than dissappointed when it did not perform well on mine. Thought I made that clear in last post.

Anyways, my new machine should arrive early next week sometime...keeping my fingers crossed.

We have 4 options:
1) Have the winner of the last compo decide.

2) Have a vote after every compo.

3) Have 2 different categores: HL1 and HL2.

4) Or just change it to HL2 since eventually every one would rather buy HL2 or be force to play it anyway.

There could still be HL1 sutff on this site any way, but it would be nice to have an updated compotition.

Hl2 is a crappy game and uses a crappy engine (Eww DirectX powered). Hl1 forever!
m0p m0pIllogical.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-04 21:51:53 UTC Post #81776
Just because it runs on DirectX...Oh well, sucked in. :D

As for the compo, I think it will stay HL1 for the time being since only a few of us have had the time to experiment properly with the Source engine.

lucky,

option 2 is out I imagine.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-05 20:21:46 UTC Post #81937
As Radib said, mapping for hl2 is about the same as HL1 but with much more options regarding detail and atmosphere. Still, I think the compos should remain in HL1 for a while since I suspect every member of twhl has the old game and it runs well on every machine... Plus, I think that working with our custom WAD files is still easier than making new materials for the source engine (making nice looking 512x512 textures isnt exactly easy in my opinion)
does anyone agree?
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-05 21:23:26 UTC Post #81945
Agreed, I'd still partake in a HL1 competition if it's got an interesting subject.

And making nice 512x textures is difficult indeed D:

I think there should be a compo for hl1, and the same compo for hl2, and they should be judged seperately..?? dunno, i think its a hot idea!?

No, he's on BSD and will burn you for that comment, being the elitist Nazi zealot he is :)

Not sure that the same-idea competition's a good idea either. Perhaps someone prominent, responsible, and who owns HL?, and I, could arrange semi-official HL? compos for a bit?

Sounds good seventh ;)

But that ends up with you & Andy :o
Unless i'm missing someone prominent, responsible, and who owns HL?...

Well, what would happen with the non-HL2 mappers? Its like playing basketball in the gym and only let the kids with shoes play. -What 'bout the kids in sock feet?-----------OK... weird and odd example..lol

Maybe even seperate compos... ??

Duh, you'll have to stick to two diff compos, HL and HL2 until HL2 picks up (along with the average speed of peoples computers). Personally I'd stay with HL1 for a bit, wait till people really start using it to it's full extent. Oh and hurry up with the next compo... I've just joined up here and am looking forward to winning.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-27 02:23:28 UTC Post #86030
Oh ya, we should also stay with HL for a bit because the SDK is still buggy.

P.S. I'm not biased because I can't run HL2, I have it, and two computers capable of running it.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-27 10:34:00 UTC Post #86056
but then theres the others.. who have'nt or are not capable of running HL2... Like me.

I got a brand new computer.. but it does't support it..
and if a compo for HL2 is started then that would exclude about
45% of the members. Including me.

A HL2 competition would be nice but... This is and always will be TWHL not TWHL? so i doubt the oldies here like Andy or Seventh etc would want to map for a new game that is similar to hl1 but takes less skill.

This is because of all the models and subside tools!

I would love to see a HL? compo but in my heart i must say HL1 forever! :P

HL2 was born from HL1's popular shell and without it HL2 would be nothing!
