There has been a recent increase in cussing/flaming/spamming.
This worrys me greatly. We have to do something, or this sites
going down the hole. :zonked:
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-03 01:24:11 UTC Post #76076
It's incurred by the flood of new mappers who signed on because of the recent release of HL2.

I agree it's not a good idea to flame n00bs, but not all newbies behave inappropriately. Most of them clue in immediately and learn the proper etiquette of forum posting and uploading maps to the vault. It's those few that just seem unable to learn form their mistakes.

Its a pity nobody hears the silent majority.

Just ignore all the crap, and everything will be fine - most importantly, keep yourself moderated.

Think: "What use is my post, maybe i should read over it..."

Instead of posting crap like this:

Bring back the TWHL i joined 520 days ago...
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-03 14:22:36 UTC Post #76144
another problem behind this, is that there seems to be a campaign running to remove anonymous posting. the obvious solution to this is simple - dont. what we really need is a forum system which logs the posters IP and can be viewed by the moderators. if theres a continuing problem, they ban the IP and delete the member profile (if they have one).
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-03 21:09:49 UTC Post #76186
I don't think it's that simple, stevezor.
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-03 21:15:49 UTC Post #76188
Isn't there already a topic on this? To be honest, I don't think its anything to worry about. Remember when this same thing happened a few months ago? It was quite chaotic fro a while, then it toned down...
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-03 21:32:09 UTC Post #76195
TWHL is drowning thread? that was sad...

I think its fine. Just not the flaming.

Spam is ok. if its in a spam thread.

Guys, this is getting annoying now. Will you please stop all trying to pile in telling atom how to run his site in absentia, seeing as most of you can't come up with ideas that actually work, like IP-based bans.

Enough with the "end of the world" and "it was better in my day" threads, yeah?

It was certainly better when I joined, but I agree with Seventh. SHUT THE HELL UP! Let atom decide how to run the place.

I'm not telling atom how to run it, I'm telling the users to stop spamming and flaming.

The best way to deal with Troll's is to ignore them.
By posting a reply to a comment, you only fuel the argument...

Do not reply to posts that annoy you.
Do not make comment.
If you ignore them they will go away.
Stick to the topic...
Simple isn't it?

So Yeah... we have to do something and that something is nothing!

Agreed. It'd help if someone deleted those useless anonymous posts though, no?
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-04 21:54:05 UTC Post #76323
They do get deleted, but the thing is that someone is usually comments back before they delete it.

Which is why we need perhaps 1 or 2 more moderators. ;)

If there all good ideas how how atom hasn`t done even the ones he listed there?
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-06 16:07:51 UTC Post #76668
Atom never intended the site to get this big - it started off as a simple experiment in PHP, then grew enormous...

we're lucky he's still paying for the bandwidth...
