OK, Valve's first mistake was, you guessed it, Steam, but this really makes me angry. I got the newest update of the Source SDK, and it is causing my computer to encounter some serious problems. What happens varies, after about 30min-1hour of mapping, an error comes up saying, "the application failed to initialize properly" then some hex, and my taskbars dissapear, all my desktop icons dissapear, and I lose access to all of my drives. Sometimes the computer will even spontaneously re-boot, corrupting any map that your working on whether you've saved it or not. Im running XP Service Pack 2, 512RAM, and im not asking for answers, im saying that it is serious that Valve fixes this. Tons of people are having this problem that have posted at the VERC, and if you have this problem, email Valve at sdk@valvesoftware.com
I did, but if more people do, its more likely they will try to resolve it.

I get the same thing :/ - It eats up memory and causes the system to malfunction and not allow you to save anything. It scared the shit out of me the first time I got it, I thought it was a virus. It seems like one.

And I was having a nice conversation on AIM with females. And after I restarted they left ;/

laughs at AOL

As for the auto-restarting:
  • Hit Winkey+Break
  • Go to the Advanced tab
  • Click "Settings" under "Startup and Recovery"
Then, about half-way down, untick "restart automatically".

Might help. It's a bad idea to have it ticked anyway.

Eww, SP2. I think that might be the problem. So many people have problems with SP2. Also, get more RAM. 1gb is a minimum these days.

Yes, closing the SDK play menu does work for me, but I think in order for software to be good in my book, it should be fully functional and not require the user to go the extra mile just to use it. Not to say that its hard to click the little X ;) , but still. And since we're on the topic of memory, my damn motherboard supposed to be running at 400 FSB, but its running at 200, and when I try to crank it up, my BIOs get all jacked up. My system goes crazy and my bios no longer actives when I try to install my new memory I got for Xmas, and this is because of the low Front side bus, but when I try to up that, my system crashes and won't start, so it's a complete circle : sigh
Posted 19 years ago2004-12-27 02:45:24 UTC Post #79799
LOL! Fucking noob. The CPU FSB is supposed to be 200MhZ. When it says 400FSB is actually means either a 100MhZ FSB Pentium 4, or your RAM runs at 400. Although, this is not true, since PC3200 is actually 200MhZ and they call it DDR400 because it performs twice as fast as SDRAM at the same frequency. You get your CPU speed from the CPU FSB MhZ * the multipler which is unchangable for noobs like you. The CPU to RAM MhZ ratio is a setting on the chipset called the divider. 1:1 means the FSB is the same as the memory module mhz. DDR400, FSB400, and a FSB of 400MhZ are very different things. If you set the FSB in the BIOS to 400Mhz, and you have a 2GhZ cpu, you would be telling to BIOS to clock the CPU at 4GhZ which is a stupid idea. The highest FSB in history is 400MhZ which was on a P4C800 with thousands of voltage mods and very powerful cooling. You noobs are so stupid these days. I swear they get dumber everyday rather than learn...

Should be MHz, though ;)

DDR SDRAM transfers on both the rising and falling edges of the clock pulse (as opposed to SDR, which only transfers on the rising edge).
Haha, winky

Actually, I have had that problem. Since I have Spybot S&D installed, TeaTimer (one of its background programs) pops up with an error that repeats heaps of times. I then lose the icons and such. I couldn't even activate the Task Manager.
The solution for me was to close the SDK window as well as Steam. Doing so aloowed me access to the Task Manager ti restart explorer.exe, afterwhich all was fine.

I'm really annoyed that Steam got it's rotten hands on our Hammer. I wish it was stand-alone like 3.4.

I was going to reply to this post a few days ago, but... well data base errors and so on.

Anyway, what I was going to say is that I doubt whether Valve's first mistake was Steam?
The more I think of it from a business point of view, the more I like the product.
No doubt Valve have made a lot of mistakes along the way.. some of them nearly catastrophic, like not having sufficient security to stop the source being stolen.
But think back people...
I think Valves biggest mistake as a corporation was the choice of it's initial distribution partners.
Their biggest win was owning the product and not working for another company.

Valve don't owe you anything, you are not doing them any favours. They already have your money!!
As a customer, you have rights... but read the fine print.
Read some of the Legal stuff on the Steam site..
Basically, just because you bought the product doesn't mean it is going to work...
Ok, so that sucks, but that's life.

Thinking about my experience with Steam and HL2 products, I would say that their biggest mistake was allowing Boneheads to moderate their support forums.

Recent example is that they have disabled the search engine due to database bloat (more likely a security problem?). One poster asked why they couldn't search anymore.
The answer was "What would you want to search for anyway".
The poster replied, " Ok, I will just post a new thread everytime i need to ask something... your problem not mine, and if you think you have bloat now then wait a few weeks"
I am sure he wanted to add... Wanker.

PS:
I like being a non 1337 tellytubby, they are fun!

yea steam was the worst thing that ever happend to my pc they make it a pain in the ass to map now and theres no more won servers so i foreced my self to try the big waste of space just to plave sven coop online then it wouldent except my REAL CD KEY THAT WAS TO OLD FOR IT then i had to go by some video card that could support hl2 and came with hl2 for free then steam sat there for a month wasting my internet connection or band with by downloading hl2 with my vaild hl2 cd key for a month and i have comcast high speed internet so i got pissed cuz it crashed my really face pc when i tried to go on the internet but it gave me a free copy of latest version hl but i still hate steam and im afraid to touch worldcraft and the input output trigger thing scares me cuz i end up screwing up big time with it and steam gets pissed at me and starts crashing my pc with the same error poping up every time i click ok for it = ive worked my way around i/o system for hamer editor and i now make cs-s maps which is fun

Umm..
You don't need Steam to map.
You don't have to use Hammer, as Quark now offers support.
You didn't have to buy a new graphics card to play Sven Coop.
You didn't have to download HL2.. all you had to do was choose not to update.
Steam crashed your 'face' PC... Ok, how? and just how 'face' is it?
Why would you want to touch worldcraft... know one else has in the last 3 or 4 years...

DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
IRQ Errors are NOT steam errors - i think you should have a look at your devices and look for any IRQ conflicts, and fix them.

Cough Keep warez behind the curtain. cough

kol, you cannot manually adjust IRQs in 2000/XP (possibly also 2003).

The error can be caused by pretty much anything, including hardware. I'd suspect your graphics drivers or related if you got it when opening Hammer.

ive had no problem with steam. as a matter of fact i had more problems with my games before i got steam. i love the fact that i can play HL2 and all my other games without fumbling for that dumb CD that crashes the game every time it gets the slightest scratch or fingerprint on it. buy the CD and install it once and forget you ever had it. and if u finally got rid of that tin-can-on-a-string dialup modem, u can download it.

come to think of it i believe CDs are becoming obsolete. i never use my CD player anymore cause i got all my songs on my ipod and most of my games ive either downloaded or they run on steam. (sorry to change the subject but i got ADD)

Once the nuclear wars begin, and the EMP will wipe your HDD, you'll be happy you kept your data backed up on CDs.
Not that that will matter, since you'll probably be dead.
