everything was fine on my comp but I wasn't able to boot because of my mistake : I felt stupid in front of my useless but 100% operational comp, then I wondered if I was the only one to intentionaly create problems when everything is fine ...

I had 2 OS on my comp : win98 and win2K, and some months ago, because of a problem (a virus or something), I deleted the win2K folder (to save some room : I wasn't using it anyway ...). but I still have to select while booting which OS to start, and last day I thought "bah it's just a waste of time, if you disable your boot.ini file, the comp will run by default win98", but I just was wrong on one point : the comp started by default win2K, which wasn't existing anymore, and I wasn't able to rename the file _boot.ini in MS-DOS, because the file was hidden : ...

Why didn't you properly get rid of Win2k?

I suggest formatting now, you've probably got bits of OS's all over the place.

Err stupid things I've ever done... install Windows? Luckily I managed to successfuly get rid of the evilness with a nice low-level format and install a decent OS. That RAID volume now contains FreeBSD 5.3. :D

-Threw my $2000 notebook across the room, landing on a hardwood floor--still works!

-was having a problem with my notebook where every so often, typing certian letters on the keyboard would yield numbers instead. The only thing I could do to fix it was system restore. After doing this 3 or so times, I realized that the 'NumLK' key was depressed...<Slaps self hard in the jimmy>

Erm, J.C.:

a) That was very very stupid.
b) Why didn't you attrib -hsra _boot.ini?

I tried the command without the "-hsra" but that didn't work, it looked like there wasn't any attrib function on my DOS I don't know why ... what does mean "-hsra" ?
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-17 19:00:11 UTC Post #91324
Removes the hidden, system, read-only and archive attributes respectively.

Very very strange. I'm pretty sure attrib is a built-in function :|.

Actually it isn't, as well as many other commands. Once I had to format and install a new OS on an old PC and the guy had XP (atleast he said so) but he screwed something and there weren't delltree, fomrat and many other functions. I had to go back home to get a proper start diskette.

Stupidest thing? Once I hit my monitor and it lost red color, thus displayng everything in green, like I was looking trough a night vision gogles.

THis one day, I did a fresh install of windows XP. Everything booted up fine, but then the monitor went black, and smoke started coming out...

I'm not even kidding. I don't know exactly what happened...It wasn't my equipment. I was at some BS class that my parents signed me up for many a years ago. It was an old monitor, so for all I know it might have been broken before. Alls I know is that after the installation, the screen went black, and it smelled like...like burning.

PTS: yeah, I know deltree and format're with .coms, but I thought attrib was standard. Actually, I do seem to remember attrib.com now.

you spilled edible liquids on your computer, but have you accidentally opened super-glue and have it spill all over your keyboard? And have it still work?
Things my keyboard has sustained
Coke, milk, tea, coffee, lemonade, superglue, whiteglue, any kind of solid food, tomatoe sauce, cat hair, dust, paper, paperclips, staples, candy, ashes.
And it still works baby!!

do you know whats worse then buying a dell...

wasting your money on a dell XPS.
I feel bad for people who do.

but i built my own so i don't have to worry about that. and the reason i built it is the reason im posting in this thread.

let me get to the point. I have become obsesed with high voltage thing and explosives, being on the school rifle team caused this mostly becasue destructive thing is the main conversation. so i did some reseach and began my quest with High Voltages. i began building a gauss gun(coil gun) and decided to test for some reason this really crappy coil I built, i don't know what possesed me to do this but i did anyway. to test it i put the to wires leading from the coil into an electrical socket about a foot from my old computer, a few fuses blew and all the electronic stuff in my room turned off, and sinse the coil had been left about a foot from my computer the hard drive was ruined. and then I was finaly allowed to get a new computer(that may have been the reason i did it in the first place but i can't remember now, alll I do remember of it is the pain that it casued in my hand.)

I think that qualifys as the stupidest thing
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-21 11:52:37 UTC Post #92219
heh heh a gauss gun :)

Stupidest thing i did was when i span on my chair and my cat was standing on the table of where my monitor sits and i had my legs in the air as i span. I eventually hit the cat and it flew miles into my monitor which fell out the window which i stupidly left open :)
