Is it a good idea to get more familiar with making maps in the HL1 engine before moving to source? I have only completed one map so far (de_household) and am thinking about moving to source. Is it still in Hammer? Do I just change the configurations so their directory is affiliated with Source and start mapping? (I assume lighting, and physics are different, as with textures)

Hammer 4.0 (Source) and Hammer 3.5 (HL1) could look similar but aren't the same software, so you have to download and install the Source map editor if you want to make maps on the Source engine.

Otherwise I don't think it's essential to start mapping on HL1 if you plan to map for HL2 : just read and practise with tutorials and you'll get the hand of it, I just hope you got a computer powerful enough to be able to run it ...

Many of our HL1 tutorials can be used for source mapping as well :)

Once people will have to map their brushes (apply textures on), I am not sure they will like them anymore : ...

Thanks. :) I probably will make a couple more on Hl1 then go to Source.
My computer is powerful enough :)

As far as I've heard, hl1 mapping is easier (as in less complicated) than source mapping. I would have to agree, as I cannot get the source sdk to work (unless I'm connected to the internet.)

I disagree

I disagree...

Source mapping lays everything out nice and easy for you.. you dont have to do detailed brushwork, you just insert a model... etc..

HL1 mapping doesnt have the luxury of displacement surfaces for terrain.
Ok, source maps are usually more time consuming because you tend to put more detail.
But the exact same map would be easier to make with the new Hammer editor.

Quite frankly I find all maps I make take ages...No matter what editor.

Source is a lot easier I think once you learn a few things...I started off with HL1 and by the time SDk ame out I had enough knowledge to make full maps. So I can't really say Source is better because I started later on with Source.
