A strange question and request...Perhaps you would like to enlighten us as to why your gaming life is over and why you suddenly want to start a career :D

Yeah the suggestions above are really all you need...You must know C++ and if you don't know then you can always use existing engines.

Why not make a few mods with other people in a team and then use that experience in your CV as a way to get a job for such companies like Raven Software, UbiSoft, Squaresoft etc...

@dustbunny: You seem to be the new "negative" person around here.

ZeG, how experienced are you? 2D or 3D? Give us some more detail.

Im not leaving. Im just.. Well i dont know what. Habboi. The thing is.. I looking for mods. Watching em. Asking to join. It goes Great.. Then it comes. Do you have any expirience of mod making. CRASH! Im pinned down. I says no. And they dont accept me. Im not a really good mapper. Beacuse i never know what to map.
Thats why i giving up now. Im trying to make a new life for me.

Or take up boxing? Live in a ring full of balding old brutes smacking you till you pass out.

or... Take up Knitting? Live in a ring full of balding old ladies smacking you till you pass out.

well, its pretty much the same for every life...

always with that bloody ring...

meh c++...c# .net with managed directx is the only way to go

uh, no.

C# is awful. So is Direct X, except for those times your too lazy to put together a couple libraries.

A lot of programmers tell me that C++ is essential if you're going into the biz. And you can always talk to the people at GameDev.net if you have any questions. I'm starting to learn some C myself.

ZeG, finish some maps, get a portfolio. Even without mod experience you'll have a much better chance at getting accepted. Additionally, get some contacts within mod teams and show them what you're working on. It's easier to get invited by a friend.

But yeah, knowing what you want to do or what you want to map... that's important to find out. Invest some time into that, as it's obviously what's keeping you back. Think about what you like, try to channel that to a map.
What I often do is keeping idea's for later. I often can't work out something at the moment I think up on it, or I fail or never finish it. It seems 80% of what you do never gets anywhere. Still, I learn from it, get experience through it and later on, it provides me with idea's I can work out at a time I look back at them.

Same goes for games: if you know what you want, you'll find a way eventually. I know I want to create games and I also know what kind of games. That makes the job easier, as I can focus better on things I need to learn and if gives you a more solid base to work on in general.

Programming is just like that. I'm programming for about, say, 3 years now. But the first 1.5 years I didn't do much simply because I didn't really know what to do with it. Now, I'm getting more inspiration, I'm getting idea's and things I want to work out that challenge me. Makes me program much more and I like it. :)

But the thing is when i starting to map and have many ideas how it would be and how to do.. But after a while of mapping it comes some sort of problem. Example: Mapped soon a week and just started to putting out lights.

I compile. When i enter my lights dont make some light on some texture. If i set i light in a corner and the ceiling is light. But the wall is just black. But if i move around a bit then it starts lit the wall. :nervous:

Then i looking around for problem. Cannot solve. BTW my entry for source competition now is :nuke: scrapped :nuke: .

I have never finished a map and i'v soon mapped 5 years.

ZeG, I'm wanting to do something like what you are wanting to do, I have no experence in any programming or anything like that. All I have really done that is close to that is make a few maps and a mod for diablo2 which isent much to show off. I've had the same troubles with making maps (I have about 50 unfinished maps) But 1 thing i'm trying to do is make some maps so I get better, most of my maps are crap and all but I'm getting better. So I say get some maps that look nice from somewhere, and get some ideas from them. Thats what I did.
