Steam installed... HL2 downloaded and updated, along with HL, CS:S, and the Source SDK.

HL runs fine... Source SDK and HL2 however will not start. The MENU for the SDK starts, but when I try to launch Hammer, NOTHING comes up... same for HL2... launching just doesn't happen.

Here's my system specs

XP Pro
AMD Athlon 1.1GHz
384MB RAM
DirectX 9.0c
VisionTek Radeon 7000

(the card is a 64MB but dxdiag is showing the following)

Approx. Total Memory: n/a
I've restarted my comp 5 times now, and NOTHING still! As I said, HL runs fine, but anything source based won't run

Wow, that's a real piece of shit rig you got there. :P

My guess is your computer is far too crap to run Source.

Yep, Even if it did work you wouldent get much out of it, min is a 1.2 Ghz CPU and people say the the video card needs to be 128mb or better
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-14 04:00:21 UTC Post #168127
I don't even think Radeon 7000 can do DirectX 8.1 (minimum for Source engine iirc). Get a better CPU and a better card :P

hmmmm.....try going into sdk and running the 'refresh sdk content' or something similar to that. just to be safe also 'reset game configurations'.
then try hammer.

Source will work on a DirectX7 card, provided you've got some meat elsewhere on your rig. Which you don't. :P

You should always read the system requirements before buying any game, unless you have a really 1337 system...
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-14 04:52:07 UTC Post #168133
It'll definitely run with a DX7 card, but I really don't think you're going to get anything out of that PC, I'm afraid.

Ant... You dont have ot be so demeaning cuz it isnt my comp to begin with.

Srry... if you w9ould read the forum archives you will discover that when I bought the game, I had a PC that was capable of running the game.

And I HAVE DirectX 9.0c
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-14 05:22:38 UTC Post #168141
That's software DX. Cards have their own Hardware DX level. The 5200 FX is DirectX 8.1 hardware, for example - Everyone should be running HW DX9.0c.

That particular card doesn't seem to have HW DX capabilities. (Check down the page: http://www.visiontek.com/all_products.html )

Yeah, that thing's barely a graphics card. It gets absolutely thrashed by a GeForce 4 MX! You don't have a hope in hell of running Source with it.

when I had GeForce 2 I could run hl2 with that one without problems. Why wouldn't it work for him, with a better configuration?

Well, here's the problem - I can NOW only put a PCI card in this computer because the AGP port is aooarently fried. So what PCI card would you recommend for lower budgets?
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-14 18:28:13 UTC Post #168281
The highest type of PCI card you still can buy is the radeon 9200 and the Gforce Fx5200. Those are the only ones left in The Netherlands, from both 2 i would recommend the 5200. It will run the game.

For the Compaq Presario 5004US ???? Socket A????? Uhm, junk!

I've got a few newer possibilities in mind.

BTW - SO CLOSE tonight! I could hear G-Man saying "Rise and shine Mr Freeman!" but no video AT ALL.

So I give up.

<BUMP>

Where can I find Hammer for the old HL? I need to map SOMEHOW! :) :

That was a rather mean string of posts there ant, but I do agree that spec would have trouble running some advanced hl1 maps..

PCI Nvidea fx5500 is the card i use and it runs HL2 fine on medium settings, and deathmatch and gmod on high settings...

In that case it's ignoring your preferences and running everything on low, Hunter.

Posted 18 years ago2006-03-25 18:17:03 UTC Post #170903
It means even though you set the card to run stuff on high etc. It actually can't handle it, so it sets it to low and runs it on low without telling you.
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-25 23:25:31 UTC Post #170943
really? i had a 5500 and accually noticed the difference between the high and low settings.
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-25 23:43:43 UTC Post #170945
Because I had heard the beginning dialog in HL2, do you think it to be possible that the video part MIGHT work?
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-25 23:53:45 UTC Post #170946
i have a 5200 while my 6600gt is broken, plays hl2 medium settings at 800x600 fine, so i would imagine that a 5500 would be better.

If you're running on a PCI slot, you've got little chance. I ran HL2 on a GeForce 2 for the majority of the time when I got it, and I had to run in the lowest res with everything on low and I still got lag spikes. A PCI card simply will not allow a card to run fast enough to get something out of HL2. I'm sorry, but my original comments apply.

The Hunter: That's impossible. I simply refuse to believe it.

Ant - your original comments were, how should I say this...

rude

But oh well... A new MoBo is in order I suppose
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-26 01:10:34 UTC Post #170952
Oh for God's sake. I'm gonna guess the addition of the " :P " emoticon in my original post was clearly overlooked. If I was being rude, I'd say something like this:

"You're a fucking idiot for not bothering to check the minimum system requirements before running Source on your machine."

And that would be followed by no emoticon. Maybe I'll just stop bothering to make stuff remotely lighthearted from now on, because it seems to me like no-one here understands it.

If your gonna buy a PCI card, buy a 6200. Thats the highest graphics card you can get that for PCI. It also supports DX9.

Personally, i had to go the PCI card path cus im too cheap. Works with hl2 on high, with better FPS than you would get without it. (1024 x 768 res)

esmajor, no single upgrade to your PC will help, you've gotta just accept it or you'll be throwing money away. Buy a new one, or stick to HL.

do you have a computer? :P

WHAT TO DO:

buy 1gb ram (?50-?60)
buy ATI Radeon 9200 upwards
overclock to 1.2ghz if possible
download ATITool and overclock ATI card memory and chip

throw it all away and kill yourself
Posted 18 years ago2006-03-26 11:31:05 UTC Post #171019
also, on the thing about playing it on lower settings than its telling me, thats rubbish...

I can see very clear differences between high and low..

I just play with no anti-aliasing at all
