I havent got this... its complicated but.. Okay: I want to convert my new skin to VMT formate. But simply i dont understund how to use VTEX. :zonked:

Get VTFEdit first.
It will assist you in creating both .vmt and .vtf files.
For a start, just import a .tga and save it as a .vtf.
Then use the auto-create-vmt feature and choose your .vtf as the base texture. (I hope that's the correct order - I never did it that way.)

Hmm.. wich files do i need to compile the model in HL2? I got the combine_zeg and putted it in: modelscombineskin_zegcombine_zeg

i typed this in hammer on model:

modelscombineskin_zegcombine_zeg.mdl

but it ends up as an "Error"

Gettings this problem when i'v placed my TGA to VTEX:

Problem figuring out outputdir for I:............

Im really getting frustrating about this... Hating when stuff wont work...

Simple....Make a folder for now called ZeG and put the TGA in there. Then copy this folder in two places:

Depending on the game e.g. hl2, hl2dm, CS:S...I'll do HL2 for now.

Paste it here: C:Program FilesValveSteamSteamAppshabboihalf-life 2hl2materials

And here: C:Program FilesValveSteamSteamAppshabboisourcesdk_contenthl2materialsrc

Then drag the .tga in the SOURSESDKFOLDER not the HL2 one onto VTEX with Steam on and it will output it in the hl2 folder. Then simply copy it out and do the rest...Aka fill the .txt file with:

"LightmappedGeneric"
{ "$basetexture" "yourfoldername/yourtexname" }

And simply rename to texturename.vmt and then copy the two files into both folders...

Texturename.VTF and Texturename.VMT

I would make a video if I knew how...

Thats cause you are in what Seventh called 'Windows Noob Mode' where extensions don't change even if you rename them...I forgot how to change..I'll look now for youbut if I can't find it I shall PM Seventh.

okay. i'v got the 3 files now. in my map: ZeG

combine_zeg.tga
combine_zeg.vmt
combine_zeg.vtm

in both hl2 apps and sourcesdk_content.

but when i type this in my model(in hammer): zegcombine_zeg

Its just showing the great ugly sign of "Error" :nuts:

This is probably cause your VMT has a mistake in it...

Make sure you VMT has this inside it:

"LightmappedGeneric"
{ "$basetexture" "ZeG/combine_zeg" }

Copy this exactly...And these files have to be in the materials section if you didn't know. Sometimes a simple spelling mistake can be fixed.

Also you have to use the same folder you dragged the TGA from so you can't say make the .vtf from a folder like ZeGrocks and then copy all the files in a different named folder.

Do you mean i need to put my files more than the 2 ZeG folders??

I checked if it was a spelling mistake.. it wasent. and i got exactly the same folder on both places..

Anyway.. maybe im just a noob or its a thing i'v made wrong on...

1st thing i did... Used a converter from VMF to TGA. Changed my things in TGA with photoshop and saved it as TGA.

2nd i placed the TGA in my ZeG map and made a copy and putted them in hl2materialsZeG and sourcesdk_content.. etc

3d used VTEX and it was successful.

4th wrote the .txt document and made it to a VMT file. made a copy and placed it in the other folder.

5th copied the VTF file to both....

End of story

Well did i forgot something???????

Uhm... what exactly are you trying to do? You said something about replacing a models skin and referred to a model named combine_zeg.mdl.
First thing that comes up to me is: did you actually create that model? You've been playing with material files and all, but the model part of it sounds pretty vague to me...

Oh, just in case, for model skins you don't use "LightmappedGeneric" in the .vmt. You use "vertexlitgeneric" for them.

Yes im reskinning a model... Well i took Combine_elite... Fixed it my way.. Made it a TGA...(it is a model skin)
