don,t instal norton anti virus 2006 trial . Why? After 30 days this norton will be disable, and then when you want to unistal you need cd norton anti visrus 2006 (cdstart.exe) whituot that you can't do unistal. After unistal my space is loss many. before instal i have 2,45Gb , after instal anti virus 2,20Gb , after unistal wahh....1,75Gb...what the..... . I belive norton anti virus save someting file which i don't know what it's. I give 5 fuck for Norton

As for your Norton woes, I sympathize, but it's a good lesson to learn how shitty they and their products are.

Afaik your best bet is to manually delete it. Delete what you can, and use delete-on-boot software to zap what you can't. Also, go Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services, and disable anything that says Symantec or Norton.

Man, I hate Norton. It feels so, how should I put it... disabled. Unfortunately for me, my dad insists that it's "industry standard", and he doesn't care if it slows down the PC like hell. It gives me problems every time I'm given the task of cleaning up the family computer.

I don't see any reason in using free trials when you can just get completely free software like AVG Free Edition, Ad Aware SE Personal, Spyware Docter, Spybot: Search and Destroy, etc.

avast! is a good, free virus scanner. For a paid version, Trend Micro Internet Security does the trick nicely. Been using it since the 2000 edition and it's never given me any issues. Nice and unobtrusive too.

i use AVG and spybot - i have no need for a firewall - no personal transactions, no reason to hack me, AVG detects viruses as they come in. in my opinion, a firewall is just an annoyance - with port forwarding and whatnot. i know some ppl swear by them, but i dont
i would never consider using norton. my dad uses it - well he used to, until he got a corrupt boot driver and i had to format his PC. he wanted norton on, but the CD he had was scratched, and his CD key was 1 digit short. lol. so i installed AVG and spybot, and he is using the sp2 firewall. it's really funny, he's psyco about keeping up-to-date antivirus progs, but he uses a word program that was made in '97. and his accounting prog is really old too. lol.

Norton really sucks. It forced my wife to upgrade when her virus datafile subscription expired. She had to pay $70 to make it work again.

In fact, not only that. It disabled many of the functions of her PC as well. They're truly an evil empire.

Never heard of Avast... I have norton(not trial) and I keep it because of it's windoctor, quite usefull... well not too often...

Current PC health: satisfactory (considering there hasn't been a defragmentaion ever since I formatted it )
Antivirus software used: None.

That's right, you don't need antivirus software at all. I used to have Norton Antivirus for some time (the only reason is because I got 3 months free when I bought my mobo) and it made my machine really slow. I tried deleting it but one service remained and it blocked ALL new software trying to connect to the internet. Luckily, I found a working unistaller which whiped it out and now I'm totally fine, whitout any protection.

I simply don't visit any suspicius sites and whenever I notice something strange I run Process Explorer (great free software, must have when you battle infestations) and terminate any unwanted activity. If this doesn't help I use System Restore, and in case it has been disabled by the virus I can always format my HDD. (valuable data can be evacuated, since viruses only affect executables and DLLs)

Process Explorer is, indeed, superb. System Restore, less so.

I don't know if I'm lucky but I use norton antivirus and I never got problem and I don't really know about antiviruses, mmh... yah that the only thing I can say...

Heh, System Restore is one of the few (if not the only) good improvements from Windows 9* series. It can save your system if you manage to run it in time (and you happen to have a recent save point, which easily accomplished by automated saving).

Formatting is always the best choise, it makes your computer run really fast and if you don't have any sensitive data this should be done quite often (it has been so long since my last format because my brother keeps yapping about how difficult it is to put stuff on CD's).

System Restore sucks. You know why? A few years ago, I kept finding the exact same virus on my computer. The reason? System Restore was keeping it safe for me, so it could be restored the next time I use it. THANKS SYSTEM RESTORE!

Waste of HDD space to me. My computer health is excellent. I run a spyware scan every few months, and the results? One or two harmless trackers. Opera, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, Trend Micro and ZoneAlarm Pro for the win!

It's such a pain in the ass to re-install all the programs once you reformat the HDD. I wouldn't recommend that as the first option.

Plus, I customized all the configurations for all the programs on my computer. It takes days to reconfigure them (not to mention all the game settings).

Ant: You can't exactly blame System Restore for becoming infected with a virus. However, that's actually a pretty good tip for those who do like/use it:

If you're infected with a virus, purge your current restore points!
