Nice lighting... thats about all I can say at this point. Its really just a hallway as far as I'm concerned. If you can, try to greate the fog effect that AOM used ala lots of very pale sprites.

AOM.. can you give me a link?

Afraid of Monsters
Give the whole mod a shot, if you want inspiration for a good horro map there's no better place to look.(and of course the game is awesome too)

well, it was... meh... I got to the 6th map/level, then my eyes started to hurt, and now I got a headache... to many dark areas like vents, elevator shafts.. etc.
But, the sound is what made it scary. The creeks, and little snaps. I will take that into account when I make this.

lol, yea, noticed that after I posted sorry :

Man though, I was just getting sound effects, and theres a few I got that by just listening to them they give me chills. :aghast:

Now, I got a question though.. How do I bind the keys so that you can only walk, and not run.. because in order to walk slow its 2 keys pressed at once (W+Shift) What I want is to have it the other way around. This may seem easy to do, just change the bind settings.. however if you open up config.cfg.. you'll see that if you switch them around then Shift is to walk, and shift+w is to walf slow.. hard to explain...
Anyone know a workaround?

Way too dark if your brightness is low.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-02 13:43:00 UTC Post #177985
yes, photos are hard to see and best viewed at night, or in a dark room.
Pressing F11 helps also.

bind "DOWNARROW" "+back"
bind "LEFTARROW" "+left"
bind "RIGHTARROW" "+right"
bind "ALT" "+strafe"
bind "CTRL" "+duck"
bind "SHIFT" "+speed"
bind "F5" "snapshot"

I think you need to switch the 2 commands in bold.

Woeps, my bad. Should be +forward :) Must have coppied the wrong part.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-02 15:23:11 UTC Post #178008
yea, thats what I thought.. but then I realized that the key W when pressed alone (or the up arrow) won't do anything... just as if you press the shift key alone, it won't do anything.
Heres the
Default:
W = Run
W+Shift = Walk
^^Here the Shift key, when pressed alone, won't do anything, unless W is pressed at the same time.

Now, when we edit it, this is what where doing:
Edited:
Shift = Run
W+Shift = Walk
^^Now in this case.. 'W' won't do anything when pressed. Unless Shift is held down.

What if I was to bind it so that:
bind "W" "+Forward'
bind "DOWNARROW" "+back"
bind "LEFTARROW" "+left"
bind "RIGHTARROW" "+right"
bind "ALT" "+strafe"
bind "CTRL" "+duck"
bind "W" "+speed"
bind "F5" "snapshot"

Not sure if it would work though, because 2 CVARS are binded to 1 key.

Edit:
I was told they could be binded like so:
bind "W" "+forward;+speed"

Yup, the semicolon does the trick in double binds.

Thank-you guys for your support. I know for a fact.. it will not be Multiplayer. There will be no zombies or aliens.. its just a demented mans place where he tortures his victims. I was inspired by 'SAW 1&2'. And I have new textures that I made which are pretty demented.. (for the darkroom and such.) Along with intense sound effects in which just by listening to them they gave me chills. This mod will only be intended for a mature audience.
For those of you who do play this once complete.. I suggest playing in a dark room, since most environments are fairly dark. (Not pitch black like Afraid of Monsters has, that would cause to much strain)

I thinks the lighting is really good for a horror mod.Quit your whining people!
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-03 14:04:16 UTC Post #178221
Yup, i like the looks of this! Try creating volumetric fog with a few smoke sprites on a framerate of 0 and a low fx amount. this gives a great effect in dark lighting.
Posted 18 years ago2006-05-03 14:26:14 UTC Post #178231
what sprite? smoke.spr? I'll give it a try. The scale would have to be pretty large right? Say 5?

Edit:
Never mind, you probably meant: xsmoke1.spr
Oh, and also we have a splash screen! I never created the image, I just added the text.
I contacted the person who created the image, and I was surprised at the quick response.. and he said I could use it.

It's really dark, sometimes too much. Even for a horror map. The pic before the last two, is way too dark. The whole room is pitch black and only the door is lit. Horror maps are sepposed to be dark but not pitch black. Add atlist some VERY dim lights in other places of that room. If not dim then make them flicker using the costum apearence. Make it that they will most of the time be off but once in a few seconds flicker. Write some thing like this: zzzzzzbbaaaaaetzzzheeeeduyzzzzzzzzzzzzzzkcaaaaaafzzzzzzzzzzz
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-06 17:38:50 UTC Post #178737
I don't think it's too dark. Looks fine on my "gaming brightness" (I crank me monitor up from 35% to 50% for gamin').

I think its pretty dark. It needs more ambient light - If it's dark on some people's screens then it really shouldn't be (unless their gamma is turned way down or something.)

Well, I hate to disapoint you guys, but I won't be adding any more lights to the area's shown in the screenshots.

If you look at the screenshots in a dark room... (if the suns shining, and your blinds are open, well.. need I say more!?) they are very clear.. I also mention pressing F11, this eliminates contrast around the edges of the photo caused by your browser which even I can't see clear.. but as soon as its in fullscreen, I can see it well.
Seventh, thanks for supporting me in this matter.. and for the others... well, I don't know what to say. I guess you'll have to wait to play it.. and if it's still to dark, which I really doubt, then do something with your monitor, either adjust the monitors settings, and Half-Life's Gamma settings, or throw it out the window, and buy a new one. :
But stop complaining about how dark it is.

When I test my levels, not once did I have to put "impulse 101" into the console in order to use my flashlight. I see perfectly well, unlike other mods such as AOM in particular, where the flashlight is a must.
(No offence to the makers of AOM)
Thanks for your attention.. and please no more. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Unfortunatly seeing HIT suck up to you the way that they are has caused me to literally hate this map. I want to play it, but I hate it because of what it reminds me of. The dumbass hypocrits praise you for your "ambient lighting" in this map, yet they fucking despised the lighting in my cs_poltergeist2. Hypocricy? just a bit. I'm not going to rate it when its released because I know I'll under-rate it.
Whatever, finish it and I'll play it.

Thanks Gargly.

Worldcraft dude:
I'll know exactly what you mean.. There modellers, not mappers.. thats why I don't take there good comments the way I'd like to. Thats why TWHL is so much better! The people in this community are mappers who are'nt afraid to criticize which I appreciate... well for the things I can change..

:)

New part is being made. The Pentagram room! I thought about this room for a long time.. thinking if I should put a body laying down on the pentagram. After much thought I decided to rescale meathooks I had to smaller ones, and now I got a corpse being hung from the ceiling with multiple meathooks all over his body.. I think I'll be hanging back on the screenshots for this room. I don't want you guys seeing everyroom.. takes away from the surprise!
