Where do you draw the line when it comes to violent video games?
I only ask because we are entering an age of photo-realistic graphics where VR could make games feel as real as.. well.. reality.

There is no doubt that games of this level of realism will arrive in the near future, and I am wondering whether you feel they should include guns.. and just about any other features of modern games...

Hmm.
Interesting subject. I think that things shall stay pretty much the same.
Becuase at the moment, when you shoot someone in most games, you just see a red bullet wound on their person and some blood splatter.

And with better graphics and better computers etc. I think most games will just stay like that, with better graphics, but pretty much just keeping the same amount of gore.
Though I think there will be more games like Soldier Of Fortune who capitalise on better graphics to make it uber gorey, but they will be the minority.

Meh, games don't influence people. Unless you've got serious mental deficiencies, you can differ between games and reality.

Also, no matter how realistic graphics will become, games will only touch 2 senses, unless someone invents some ?ber-cool machine that can illude the sense of feeling, tasting and smelling aswell. It's just not enough to become completely immersed in the game with only sound and visuals.

I draw no line. The responsibility lies within the parents to keep their kids from getting mentally disturbed.

I agree with everything ZL said.

Also, you really have to be out of your mind to consider treating RL like video games would be treated. I mean really out there man...

my line starts being drawn at animal violence and stuff.. like im good with human limbs being blown off.. intestines everywhere.. but if you kill like a dog or something with the same level of violence.. eh.. its just not cool.
i agree with orpheus about the parenting issue. so thats basically my POV also

Quake 4 draws the line for me. They took gore way too far in that game, and it made me not want to play it in bulk as i usually do with games.

Captain P got it spot on - its not the games, its the parents. Plain and simple.

Games are for entertainment purpouse only, has nothing what so ever to do with real life, unless you fancy running around killing people that is. But if youre one of them i suggest enlisting into the army. Or starting by killing yourself :P

PS: there are smell printers out on the marked allready. And theres vibrators in joysticks and stuff. so... yea. :P
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-14 01:33:00 UTC Post #179914
Does the joystick vibrate in Vice City when you open the hooker-sex easter egg?

anyway, I think that as long as video games don;'t cause you to do anything bad, it's fine. I don't care how violent they are, really. Most of the stuff I shoot in games are just aleins anyway.

i need to turn done my joystick vibrate - it scares me... i swear one day it will vibrate off my desk!!

lets stop talking about vibrating joysticks. Now, please.

You say its the parents responsibility, but a large ammount of parents couldnt control their kids properly if their life depended on it...

Chavs and NEDs must have some pretty dumb parents

Well, if you can't control your kids, you've failed. Miserably if they become a chav.

It'll be the whip for my kids.

Films became extremely gory and realistic even before videogames had more than 16 colors.
Games can become more gory as far as I'm concerned (I felt the gibs were missing in HL2), just as long as they have an M rating.
Part of the population still thinks that every videogame and every animation movie is for kids, which all of you know is far from the truth. If we can get people to understand that concept, parents will think twice before buying certain games or even buying hardware for their kids.
You say a lot of parents can't control their kids properly... There a lot of ways to control access to a PC or a console, at least in your own home.

I sort of feel lucky to have been born two decades ago. I had the chance to play with these before videogames and PCs became our everyday machines.

People make movies with gore a lot more realistic than video game gore. Enter movies like Dawn of the Dead. I'd probably have to draw the line at....... well, never! Realism = win as long as you are sane enough to realize that its JUST A GAME.

I haven't heard about it, but it may not be here in america. Anyone who thinks that wouldn't be unconstitiutional is a dumbass

I would draw a line at one point. Random, gory shooting of people I don't mind, but if video games ever go the direction of movies like Hostel with large amounts of extreme cruelty and torture, I'm avoiding those games like the plauge.

Worth noticing:

If the games makes it all the way to "photorealistic" it will probably be no worse than watching an action movie,,, it's just that you're in it. :o

Its entertainment, to each their own and if your children are affected by them you really shouldnt have let them play the bloody thing now. I dont really see a line, yes I would be extremely offended and angry at a game approaching something like murder of children, paedophilia or other extremely taboo subjects in society, but they will never be made or allowed to be publicly released.

game responisvely. like alcohol, and drugs, and everything else thats good for ya. Too much of a good thing is bad. Same can be said about graphics. Sure its nice and all, but photorealistic gore for a young kid can be traumatizing. And all this has been said.

parents nowadays piss me off. I saw a lady on the bus yell at her little crying boy to "shut the fuck up you're giving me a headache!" while all the kid wanted was to be held since the bus was moving. (highest grade in parenting class :glad:  )

I think everyone needs a dose of responisibility with the power we can behold in this day and age. Even for developers with the gore and realism. Even if they target older audiences.

A lot of shops sell me 18+ games when i clearly look younger than my own age....

Games like F.E.A.R, Farenheit and TS2 have all passed through the checkout and into my shopping bag.

As far as games with pedophilia and other such examples, those are moot because they would never make it into production so even expressing them as a potential line is sorta redundant.
