Indeed Rimrook, Yet he wont be completely retired. It said he would resume chairman and watch over things of importance, but not the smaller things, like his shit programs that dont work very well!

"Although Gates will remain Microsoft's chairman, he will no longer be giving his attention to Microsoft's development and affairs in the same manner that he has been doing."

That demented paperclip will haunt my dreams forever.

So? He donates more to charities than entire countries do. Many people make lots of money in his region, yet do you pick up on them, when they Don't donate to charities?
like his shit programs that dont work very well!
If they are so bad, don't use them. No one is pointing a gun at your head and forcing you to use it. If it is so bad ,there are many other programs out there. Sure, some may be difficult to use, but at least they aren't "shit programs" eh?

I find it quite pathetic to be making fun of him just for making more money than you. He donates more than you as well, oh wait, does that make him a bad person?

Weeellll, there aren't always good options.
Personaly I haven't got any bad experience of microsoft programs (just some..)
But I don't own my own servers and so on.
For example, I've heard that microsoft server-programs has a habbit to live a life of their own and change user-edited setups without letting the user know.
Some microsoft programs are pure shit, and there are no options, but there are also some very good programs.

He donates more than you
If i have 100 quid to my name and give 10 quid of that to charity thats 10% of my total wealth, 10% of Bill Gates worth is a LOT

If i have 100 quid to my name and give 10 quid of that to charity thats 10% of my total wealth, 10% of Bill Gates worth is a LOT
But the big question here is that.. Do you give that 10 quid to charity?
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-17 18:12:28 UTC Post #185532
I cited the example from experience, im not saying what he does give to charity is no small feat however

is paying for a game u bought charity?

paying for something you bought is unnecessary repetition

About the guys who try to say he's an angle because of his donations I can say one thing:
He might have donated alot but how much from his all money the donations are? Nothing. If he was really trying to be nice he'd give away half of his fortune away to charity, he will still have a cople of billions left.
Don't try to back him up.

Besides the use of donations is very little! If he wants to help people he should do more then donating millions of dollars. He should fight for people's basic rights and even try to make a whole revolution(doesn't have to be violent you know) in order to really help people.
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-17 20:00:07 UTC Post #185546
Yeah, he could, but seeing as how it's a capitalistic democracy, he can do whatever the fuck he wants. If I were that rich I'd buy plutonoim and nuke the entire world.

G_KID, because they are crap, I dont use them unless forced through school. When I am forced, its not with a gun to my head, it happens to be George Bush and the state law of Texas. I have to use this crap in case I wish to pass school. And when I say "Shit programs" I do NOT mean all of them... MSword is allright, yet im meaning things like publisher.. Publisher has a mind of its own and does what you dont want it to. Yet, I have to use it because the stupid teachers dont allow you to work at home, in which case I would just use something else.. In what way does my opinion give you the option to flame me when you have no idea if I even do use them actively or not.. The opinion is based off of past experience, so I DON'T use them.

Not much.

Steal dos. Then work with the guy that started apple, steal the idea for "windows" and "icons" and make a crappy os.

Sell it to everyone because it so uber, and there ya go.
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-18 07:17:31 UTC Post #185614
everyone stole windows and icons from xerox, whoopdedoo

bill gates was a very good business man and a geek to boot, he knew how the market would shift and how to market his products to accomodate that and become the dominant force

of course there was also a bit of luck involved along the way

Why do you even bother to comment on a discussion thread started by Elon? He's still a nublet, unable to recognise that the real world is not black and white and not everyone is just plain evil/greedy or selfless/flawless.

Apart from the MPAA of course, they're EVIL.

Guys.

Bill gates has over 27.8 billion dollars.

Did you know that when he dies over 50% of his wealth will go to charity. He spends more money on charity then any country.

He made his money on the a fair way. Elon, your pretty damn ignorant.

Astonishing...I guess that more than makes up for Windows 98 and the dreaded BSOD in my book! Whoo Bill!

when you have 28 billion dollars you can quite easily give away 10 billion and not actually notice a change in your lifestyle

This just shows how little you know me. Maybe you got the impression I think the world is black and white but I don't, I know there are many shades between. I never said some one is purly evil or good nither will I ever say it.
Elon, your pretty damn ignorant.
Apart from not knowing that 50% of it goes for charty, I still don't think that is really something to praise him for. If he really is good, the least he'll do is give away money. Money isn't the only thing that is needed.
He made his money on the a fair way.
Did I ever said he didn't, but he still doesn't need it.
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-18 19:27:07 UTC Post #185742
The point is, he earned his money, therefore no one has the right to demand that he should donate. Would you like it if someone tried to force you to donate some of the money you've worked hard to obtain?

And no, how much money one has is not relevant.
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-18 20:28:46 UTC Post #185746
Free will ftw. However, his company does push some pretty mean tactics to (successfully) monopilze the market, putting smaller corporations out of business. That's my main grudge against MS. When companies grow too big, monopolies, they automatically become corrupt.
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-18 20:35:46 UTC Post #185749
I never said he has to give it away either.

46.6 billion accually. net worth wise that is.

so he could donate 40 billion and not notice a change in lifestyle.

his kids would probably complain in that case, becasue they will want that kind of money when the old man kicks it.
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-19 02:26:14 UTC Post #185771
In religion, it's the percent of your net worth that you donate that counts.
In the world, your ten quid sucks.

I think it's funny that about 90% (i guess) of people who badmouth microsoft, use their products. I like their software, but I hate their "Activation" and "validation" crap.
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-19 05:01:20 UTC Post #185779

Yeah, er, maybe that's because exactly why they bad-mouth them? Most people have no choice at the moment.

I like their validation stuff. I have an illegal version of Windows, so they only give me security updates and don't harass me with stupid crap like Windows Media Player. Score.

Oh, and I didn't have to activate this, either.

Serious incentives for people who use legal copies, eh?

Windows Vista will use quite a lot of DRM techniqes to make sure us poor warez-users will die an early death. 'Tis a sad day for all when the world adapts everything to Vista.

Anyway, yeah, Bill Gates could donate tonnes more than he does now, but that's up to him. Calling someone evil because they're not giving their money away seems a bit narrow-minded to me.

im not sure whether to buy a legal copy of vista
1. legal - activation and stuff
2. not legal - dont have to fork out $$

i think that vista will be almost uncrackable, so i will probably fork out the $$.

First off, I dont understand all the hatred towards Windows. Face it, Linux, when not used as a server, has tons of problems.
Someone go fetch m0p, he's needed here.
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-19 11:18:36 UTC Post #185885
badly...

Linux is about as problem free as you can get. the only problems come from when you don't know how to use it and screw up everything.
Posted 17 years ago2006-06-19 14:15:02 UTC Post #185929
I use Linux quite regularly on my mini-pet 'puter and trust me, Linux is far from problem free :P

The truth is, MS have made the best desktop OS out there, it seems hard to believe they are best at something but it's true. They've got things like compatability, which consumers actually care about, right. Some would argue that Mac OSX is superior but they've failed on compatability, they broke everything and they're not showing signs of getting better. They have two versions of their OS on two different platforms ffs.

Okay, so Windows has a lot of bugs, but trust me, Vista will fix that. I'm sure some other flaw will crop up, but there simply is no better alternative that can handle everything it does. No-one wants to/can develop an OS to rival it. No matter how hard you try, OSX+ will always run on Mac hardware, that's what makes it successful in it's own little way but in the industry as a whole, makes it unsuccessful. And for Linux/Unix they're not ideal desktop OS's. They were simply not started for that purpose. Give it a few years, about four, and the whole desktop Linux bubble will collapse, they'll have realised that home consumer products are better off to be made by large multi-nationals with lots of R&D money.

Sorry Elon, my comments were a little harsh, I was just trying to shock you into action. :D
