Cloaking device

Wow, they've actually constructed a cloaking device which, whilst not invisible to the human, is invisible to microwaves. Seems like the beggining of something awesome, or plain annoying.

I changed my mind. It's not scary anymore. :D

Too bad we're not to the point yet where we can actually make ourselves invisible.

ya pointless unless the military uses microwaves for detection which i somehow doubt, yet do not know.
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-19 16:11:52 UTC Post #200143
I was actually thinking about something that would work almost the same way yesterday.
Pretty impressive but seemingly useless. I'd still rather see a device that bends visible light waves instead of freakin' food-cooking energy.

Who cares? OWOWOWOWO MICROWAVES!! IS AMAZING!!

I don't care about it now either, but i do care about the possibilties of expansions on this in future.

radars work via microwaves.

and sadly, to develop a meta material like this that can effect ALL the visible spectrum will be near impossible for some time still
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-19 17:26:28 UTC Post #200155
We might be closer than you think. I remember seeing pictures from a camera that could take "stealth" photos a long time ago. The person would wear some special suit and when their picture was taken, the suit was transparent.

thats just green screen tech, I remember that
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-19 20:32:50 UTC Post #200179
Erm are you sure? I don't think thats very safe... using microwaves for radar...

But oh noez! Now my hot pockets will be able to avoid detection by my microwave x.x
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-19 20:34:37 UTC Post #200180
They have something that is related to cloaking. It is this big jacket that some how bends the light to go around you, so it looks like you are invisable. Although you are not 100% invisable, it is awesome! If it were night time out NO ONE would see you. I saw it on TV once.

You'd be surprised how many little midgets are after your Hot Pockets. Yesterday i counted at least 6 in my sink alone, waiting.... for the hot pocket.... sneaky little bastards.....
I stepped on them though. Keep fighting the good fight!

zomg lets all go in full-blown james bond invisible car spam thread and how its possible/impossible
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-19 22:08:56 UTC Post #200186
God, that's useless! Why would you want to make something invisible to a microwave anyway...

Shit, we all use toasters and ovens.

I don't want cloaking shit in my hot chocolate. How the hell would that taste?

But in all seriousness, if I were in the airforce, I wouldn't really want those, because if they gave out, however they happen to glitch up, and I'm in some nasty territory, there will definately be a letter home.
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-19 22:18:24 UTC Post #200188
Microwaves are used in radars, but it is not the same frequency and the microwaves in your microwave, so stop complaining about hot pockets :P

As for an invisiblity cloak, it would need to be multiple layers for each part of the spectrum you wanted to block, and once inside one, you wouldn't be able to see out at the same frequencies.

Although I don't know what kind of use they will have for it (I bet it's too expencive for the military)

Too expensive for the military? Are you high? Nothing, it would seem, is too expensive for the military.

Saw a sort of cloaking device a couple years ago. all it basicilly did was have a projection of the suit or something, It didn't look great, but could have military uses, hiding tanks, troops buildings, from overhead planes.
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-20 17:10:20 UTC Post #200248
Yeah, saw that one, it sucked. And for hiding buildings, you'd need something a bit cheaper than huge screens.

I'm a busy man :P

So, it will be used on stealth planes and that kinds of things? Neat.

I think the Japanese developed a suit filled with microcameras which where displayed on the other side of the suit, didn't make you inviseble but I guess it would be hard to see someone with the suit in terrain or perhaps "one colored enviroments" like snow.

Hey, guess what? The first computer sucked too, and it was expensive.
If they keep improving it [the cloak], it could have many uses. Like spying on your neighbours.

If an actual cloaking device is ever invented, I can see it being quickly outlawed, or not even released for the public, but instead kept for the military, etc. If civilians could get their hands on such things, it'd quickly get out of hand.
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-21 23:07:44 UTC Post #200346
No, if a cloaking device were invented they would revert to thermal sensors. And if they come up with a way to blend their temperature too then people will start using brain wave detectors or something like that. There's always a way out.
Edit: Oh, public. Well what kind of country would even ocnsider release stealth technology to the public anyway?
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-21 23:11:44 UTC Post #200347
Infared detectors can easily be fooled by glass.

About the buildings, I didn't mean skyscrapers, just small bases/tents, that the military would use.
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-22 01:03:00 UTC Post #200353
whos talking of releasing to public. some greedy idiots always gonna leak such crap
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-22 05:41:02 UTC Post #200373
I highly doubt cloaking technology would be put on the market. Just expect the military to advance and 'abuse' this as much as possible.

whos garry? did you perhaps name your kitchen apliances?

yeah garry's my microwave and samus is my blender...i named my toaster Gman because he never speaks to me anymore :( i think hes still mad at me for that whole resonance cascade thing

but he'll get over it
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-22 18:51:57 UTC Post #200437
i'm sure he will. I also tend to pull a magnetic screwdriver striaght through all my computer parts when they're not behaving. ONe must show them whos boss after all
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-22 21:58:35 UTC Post #200473
ah yes, of course you should, i prefer to squirt all my electronic equipment with a spray bottle when they behave badly...it seems to shut them up

for good

NOw you dont need the F-117 anymore, just fit a TAC plane with this and let them bring in the goodies, imagine a squadron of A-10's or SU-25's slipping through the enemy radar and raise hell. Heck, all you needed to hang underneath the plane are MK-82's.
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-23 07:44:10 UTC Post #200508
Yes because we are all familiar with these plane names.

Posted 17 years ago2006-10-23 17:15:42 UTC Post #200582
mutirefractive metamaterials won't be around until long after those planes have been replaced pepper. and by then we will have other detection methonds
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-23 17:26:06 UTC Post #200586
Planes will be replaced by UAV's and UACV's round that time anyway :) .
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-24 00:38:18 UTC Post #200639
If your talking cloaking device like actual invisibility it's more dangerous than a loaded gun, of course it won't be released to the public.
Posted 17 years ago2006-10-24 17:42:32 UTC Post #200735
yawn. Don't you just love it when wanna-be professionals try to impress other by talking about complicated shit and names noone has an idea means =D ;)

True Gangstas like me dont need cloaking devices. i just round up my crew of pipe wielding n***ers and we go jack some shit. no need for invisibility, though you might want to have it when oyu see us 0-o
