113 people in Somalia die and noone gives a shit.

of course i know, im just saying thats its bullshit and people should think about it

It's not every day people go on rampages in schools and single-handedly kill 33 people, especially not in the US. The media loves to be able to cover that stuff when it happens, because it hits "close to home" for a lot of people. In places where violence is going on all the time, it's just kind of expected. You might think it's sad, and maybe it is, but it's the truth. I say, get over it.

P.S.

You don't think people have thought about it before?

So? It's a third world country. Tons of people get massacred in those places every day, and the living conditions are shit. Noone might care about it, but the media sure doesn't.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-21 00:14:14 UTC Post #219628
That shit's been going on forever, in a country no one wants to know about.

It's not everyday ONE guy kills 32 people in a country with such high economic / worldly status such as United States.

Arcan is kinda right, that genocide should be much more important and uprising. Alas people tend to ignore it because it doesn't consern them, and start making up excuses, like the one srry gave-"it's a third world country". It's not something that common in such countries, one's life aren't hanging by a thread and he always lives in fear. There are times like that indeed, but these things also happen in our sublime westren culture.

The reason the press usally ignores it is becuase it's not new, fresh and intresting. It wont intrest people as much as a really new occation will.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-21 02:07:55 UTC Post #219637
It wasn't an excuse, it's the truth. You know it is, and you just said it yourself. Unless there's something going on that directly impacts us in these sorts of places, it's likely it's not going to be covered by the media, or at least not to much extent. I never said it doesn't matter, I'm just giving reasons why it isn't being played up.
There are times like that indeed, but these things also happen in our sublime westren culture.
Oh really? And can you give any recent examples of when that's happened in our "sublime westren culture"?

The reason people acted like this is because its not everyday people get shot up in America. And besides, i hadn't even heard this had happened. :(

The news and our attention is decided by closeness. Both regarding geographical vicinity and cultural similarities. The US is more like our own countries than Somalia - and for that reason alone, we care more about what's going on there. Simply because it's similar to where we live. Call it tragic, call it human, that's just how it is.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-21 07:40:51 UTC Post #219652
here's the formula used by most news outlets:

1 pretty white female = 3 white males = 15 Brits = 40 Spaniards = 100 Mexicans = 2,000 Iraqis = 70,000 Asians = 500,000 Africans

I'll tell you whats bullshit the fact that on the same day as the shootings over 200 iraqis died in car bombings at once yet there was no news coverage
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-21 09:28:54 UTC Post #219657
ok, so Americans would care about it. But what about Europe and the rest? they're actually closer to Somalia geographical wise.
And quality of life has nothing to do with shootings you evil piece of shit trapt. If your argument is "they woulda died anyway", well why don't you go plant a bullet between your eyes right now since you're gonna die anyway?

im afraid it is the cultural similarities question =[
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-21 10:01:13 UTC Post #219659
The word 'news' means that exactly. News.
The fact that dozens die in Iraq everyday makes it not be a unique incident. That doesn't mean it's not horrible. But it's been commented tons of times.
Why do we seem to care more about the VT shootings than the Somalia incidents? Speaking for myself, it's easier to relate to engineering students in a western country I lived in than thinking about the casualties caused by fights between the Ethiopian army and Somalian and Islamist fighters.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-21 10:36:05 UTC Post #219664
Arcan, life is worth so precious little over there that it REALLY doesn't make a difference if all these people die. It's become a way of life.

I'm not saying it's not sad that these people are dying, I'm saying most people don't give a shit because they don't see it as news.

Why don't you stop telling people to kill themselves and go ahead and do it yourself, I'm sure most people wouldn't care. Niggers die everyday anyway!

That was in the news... I remember seeing all the charred vehicles all piled up.

All of these incidents are obviously bad...
But I have to agree that the reason we put emphasis on the Virginia Tech shootings is because it happened so close to home. We can relate more to a society that we live in. A friend of mine actually goes to Virginia Tech.

The killings death and destruction all over the world are horrible, but when something happens that poses danger to ourselves, it scares us a little. My friend was not in that building that day, and she's fine, but the reality that there are sickos out there, brooding evil thoughts and waiting for us to let our guard down, whether it be at college campuses or the work place, is a reason for personal concern.

I hope you do understand I'm not downplaying the loss of life in other countries, or trying to be selfish, but looking out for ourselves is as important as looking out for others.

The whole "bring it home" thing is pretty much why I am concerned about trying to combat Terrorism. There are people out there, radical brainwashed people who have destroyed and twisted Islam, who want to kill me. The fact is, as an American, they want me to die. I don't appriciate it when someone wants to murder me, or wish harm on me, and it does bring a whole new sense of awareness to me.

An old teacher of mine, back from high-school, was actually in the twin towers, in the second building hit. He tried to escape from an elevator, but when the second plane hit, the entire elevator shaft was torched, killing him.

The fact that this could happen to me, and that it did take away someone who was a good friend, infuriates me. I don't wish death upon those who did this, I only wish that they should not be able to do this again, and if that does mean death, then that's a price I would be willing to take.

Then, when something happens far from home, in a third-world country, I still am upset and crave for justice, but the motivation for self preservation is gone. This would be an instance in which my motivation would be the betterment of humankind, which I'm sorry, but Human nature doesn't have an instinct for that, it's all mind.

but this justice crap is exactly what causes so much hate. If one side could just take a hit once and not strike back there would be alot less consequences. This inability to forgive and forget is why people keep coming back to fuck up the other side. Then the other side "craves justice" and the cycle is repeated.

trapt missed the point btw. try again please

That's why you should always be scared of terrorists trying to murder everyone. Don't forget to buy safety-kits such as parachutes for jumping out of skyscrapers, or home-use radiation suits.

For me, there are three types of Islamist terrorism.

-The one that works as endless retaliation (a guy blows himself up near a tank because an Israeli/US/etc missile brought down his house and half his family).

-The one that works as pure terror and "metaphorical" vengeance, in which the victims are many more and have much less to do with the supposed conflict.

-The one that apparently looks just like the previous one, but in which the attacks have some sort of outside help and have the objective of a political change of some sort.

Lots of people die every day, not everybody is going to make a headline, but usually, when a school gets shot up that makes front page news because schools are factories for tomorrows workers, blue or white collar, it doesn't matter.

Perhaps this will urge the US to reconsider it's gun laws.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-22 14:01:00 UTC Post #219790
If all gun crime dissapears due to gun laws, then we'll have knife crime. If we ban all bladed objects and bladed objects crime dissapears, we'll have pepper spray crime. Eventually we'll all be wearing strait jackets.

Arcan, your an idiot. You took the term small country too literally.

What i mean by small country is that if you asked someone where it was on a map, they wouldn't be able to tell you. Or a small country as in something people rarely talk about.

Yeah, and fifty times as many people would kill you for drugs, I'm sure.

Proportion, folks. If you're not keen to give up the rights you supposedly care about in the name of reducing violent muggings, why do you desperately want to throw it all away for the one in a billion chance you'll be killed by an Islamic terrorist? The terrorists clearly beat you.

I doubt it'll make anyone reconsider gun laws; there's the whole bullshit with the second amendment and all. Then again, our administration has already shown little regard to constitutional rights so any changes that are unconstitutional wouldn't be suprising in the slightest.
