Ok I need to create a texture that fades from a light. The same effect seen in jaguar's latest map. And billions of others. I tried by making a texture that starts out all color and fades to black with the spray paint tool and made a func_illusionary rendermode additive fx_ammount 100 but it looked like crap. I know you don't use rendermode texture because the ends of the light beams are always completely invisible. How Do I make a fading texture that fades to a completely invisible end and looks good?

How i do gradients in photofiltre (free software):

1. Dowload PhotoFiltre

2. Start a new PF file, and make the canvas size something HL-friendly (i chose 256 x 128).

3. Select your entire canvas (ctrl-a) and then click on the gradient tool: User posted image .

4. In gradient tool options, choose color 1 and color 2 and the desired "direction" options above.

5. Finally, go to Menu: Image/mode and check "indexed color", save as Bitmap, and it's ready to get wadded up!

Here's my method . I use GIMP ( GNU license , this means you can use it for free ) . In the color selector push the buttons like in the image ( push de slider down until it's black like in the image ).

Take a screenshot , then "Ctrl+v" in Paint , select the gradient and save it as BMP ( if you save it in JPG now you'll lose quality ) .

Open it in GIMP again , click on "Colors" => "Colorize" and then push the sliders until the desired Color(Hue) , Saturation and Lightness.
