I downloaded and updated the SDK, however, when I started mapping, things slowed down greatly then got system memory problems.... indicating possibly my computer is no longer able to map like it used to...

Stats are:
Win Xp Pro SP3
Pent 4, 2.53 GHz
1.25 GB Ram
7600 GS (512 MB) Video...

Thinkin I need more RAM and CPU power.... what do you think? Lol.

Your CPU speed is efficient, as is your RAM.
Try doing some virus and spyware scans, a disk defrag, and shutting down those resource consuming process while playing. It'd really help.

Defragged and all that and scans are clean.. the camera view wont show up at all (just black box) and I still manage to lag out during maps ... I really need the camera working more then anything to see what Iam doing in 'real time'

Have you tried changing graphics drivers? Either updating or rolling back a version or two.

Yeah that problem seems relevant to graphics. Do as Luke said and report back. But the lagging out doesnt make too much sense. That wouldn't be effected by graphics rendering, but you have plenty of RAM for HL2DM. =/

check your 3d view is set to 3d textured and not ray traced lighting or anything like that.

Yea that was the first thing I did was check the view (I used to map when 1.6 was the big thing, so hammers not 100% new to me) I set to 3d flat (typical for me) and 3d texture.. and nothing shows up. using the keys that typically move it, and mouse clicks don't seem to help, still black screen. Made a new map, made a box and put a spawn in it... and still nothing shows up. Not even the origin point.

Iam going to re-install my video....

oh, that is a common problem with hammer. just go to
view > go to co-ordinates
(i think it's the view menu)
and enter in "0 0 0" without quotes.

if you're still having performance issues, it's probably just hammer doing its usual thing.

Can you run HL2 and HL2DM fine? Hammer and HL2 are very closely linked.

I have a much more shitty computer than you do, but i have no problem with mapping for source.

Those specs are more than enough for HL2/Ep1 and should support Ep2 on medium graphics, thus the SDK aswell.

I think it's most likely a drivers problem.

Or simply click the Camera Tool, and draw a line in one of the three grid windows (Top View is recommended). If you still don't see anything, the camera is probably looking away from your brush(es). Simple move around in the camera window until you see something or draw a new line and make it look at your brushwork.

I hope that makes sense. :P
