why is it so bad to use the clipping tool in Hammer? i have never had a problem with that for years.

but everyone keeps saying "huuhuh vertex tool is so awwesoome" or something like that. WHY?? here is the result of me, using the vertex tool for the SECOND time in my life today (last time some years ago with same result), just to see how "awesome" it was again... NOT!!!

from under, a nice V-shaped thing like I wanted it to be:

but i moved the camera over and I wanted to smash my PC to pieces:

sorry everyone, but clipping owns the shit out of vertexing.

First of all: no one ever said the clip tool was bad. You're probably thinking about the carve tool, which can be horribly misused by inexperienced mappers, read more here.

The clip tool should definitely be a part of any mapper's habits.

You're also making an argument where there is none - the vertex manipulation tool is in no way a replacement of the clipping tool. They're for two different things entirely. For some things (such as aligning vertices, duh) the vertex manipulation tool is supreme, while the clipping tool is better for others (such as splitting brushes up).

Oh, and if your brush became invalid after using the vertex manipulation tool, it's not the tool's fault, you just suck. Seriously, learn how to use a tool before you start criticising it (protip: concave brushes is a no-no).

No it doesn't. You're just saying that because you don't know the hazards that comes with vertex manipulating. You probably created an invalid shape and thats why you get that weird face when you move the camera around. If you hit Alt+P, Hammer should give you an invalid solid structure error.

See if you understand this:

The second brush is a concave brush and thus invalid. If you absolutely need a shape like that, you'll have to use two seperate brush (brush 3).

Check out our vertex manipulatiion tutorials to learn more about it.

The clipping tool is usually used to cut brushes, not to make complex shapes, as it creates off-grid vertices which is bad for the overall performance of your map.

ok sorry HAHA! i never knew this, because some day long time ago I used that vertex and that gave me that error thing.

and yes, I must have mixed up carving and clipping :P hehe. i have never used the real carving thing, thankfully.

Not if you clip properly, e.g. clip from one grid point to another. Again, depends entirely on the user, not the tool.
