Autodesk recently demonstrated an upcoming version of what I believe is 3D Max, taking advantage of the multi-touch feature that will be found in the next, new version of Microsoft Windows, known for now as "Windows 7". On this video you will see zooming in & out, rotation, polygon deformation and more using just screen touch.

Something like this will surely open the doors to a lot of people not normally in to 3D modeling. And let's face it, Autodesk products are not exactly for newbie's, and yet with this Windows 7 multi-touch technology and some practice, it could very well be, but to be really sure, we will just have to wait and see if it's really that practical. This gives a whole new meaning to "hands-on". This could actually be the start of a new era in the 3D modeling world.

Actually, I dont think it will hit off that well in terms of 3D modeling. The blunt quality of people's fingers disables the user from being able to put something exactly where they need to. It lacks accuracy.

Dont get it wrong though, it is rather cool.

Basically a tablet with extended fuctionality. Yeah its cool, and I'd probably get a copy, but its really nothing new. The iPod touch can do that.

That was my very first thought when I first saw the Autodesk demonstration video. Now, I am pretty sure the reason they did this demo video with just a finger, was to help convey to the audience a bit of "wow-shock". I will bet you that just as easily you can use a finger, you can also use a fine pointer pen, similar to the one the Nintendo DS & most PDA's use, that will resolve the "blunt" issue. As for the accuracy problem, no different from what you can do in a graphics editor like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop, just zoom in closer to the area of the model you want to work on, and your accuracy will improve, you will have more control of the area as far as details are concerned.

Let's just hope it's not on the same vertical surface, because that would be inconvenient. :/

Uhmm,....good point. Well, you can always try to switch between your left & right hands every once in a while to help reduce hand fatigue, just like a good dual-hand major league baseball pitcher would do. And just in case, having a tube of Ben Gay rub cream and a bottle of Advil won't hurt either.
