Talk about your favorite Indie/Casual games here!

Indie = Independent video game development

Here's a list of my favorites (in no particular chronological order):

Bejeweled Twist by PopCap Games
My favorite at the moment, released on October 27th 2008.

Crimsonland by 10 Tons
Fight waves of aliens, zombies, spiders with an enormous arsenal of weapons, from Uzi to plasma rifles to ion shotguns!

Jets 'N' Guns by Rake in Grass
A sidescrolling shooter a l? Tyrian and Raptor: Call of the Shadows.
Upgrade your spaceship with a huge amount of front, side and rear weapons, bombs, missiles, extra armor, better engines, generators, cooling equipment and more! The best sidescrolling shooter out there!

Chuzzle Deluxe by Raptisoft and PopCap Games
Match 3 type of game in witch you match 3 or more clusters of fuzz balls called Chuzzles to score points. There are rainbow Chuzzle for point boosts, fat Chuzzles (when annoyed, they burp) and explosive Chuzzles (match 5 or more). My second favorite game (at the moment).
Me reaching 100.000.000 points in Chuzzle Deluxe!

Here are some more of my PopCap Games favorites:

Peggle Deluxe Ready, aim... bounce!

Insaniquarium Deluxe Feed fish and fight aliens in the craziest aquarium around!

Heavy Weapon Deluxe It's shoot-'em-up arcade action at its best!

Astro Pop Deluxe Blast off to unearthly arcade puzzle action and an awesome storyline!

Dynomite Deluxe It's prehistoric egg-blasting fun!

If you're a fan of Indie/Casual games, give one of the above a try!

Enjoy!

Not much of a fan of the genre, though I do remember spending quite some time on Zuma.

World of Padman. A free FPS using the Quake III engine.
I generally avoid all games with "delux" as part of their names.
So do I.

Why is that? "Deluxe" is not actually part of the title. All games by PopCap can also be played in your browser. The Deluxe version is simply the same game, but better graphics and offline play.

Worms. I recently rediscovered it, along with an ancient copy of Army Men 2 which I've had alot of fun with in skirmish mode.

One thing that makes the game great to play in skirmish mode is the ability to make all dead soldiers turn into zombies, ally with all other players in the game, gather at one spot, then blow them up and watch the zombies rise and chase everyone down. Great times.

Hey, anybody here has an account with Facebook? Is so, have you heard about their "Social Arcade"? I just found about it myself about a week ago through TheGameCreators.com website. I am not going to say it's good or bad, I have not tried it out yet, but I am starting to hear a lot of buzz about it on some of the other gaming forums. Anyway, here's a direct quote from them saying on what's it is all about:
User posted image
Social Arcade is a Facebook exclusive application allowing anyone to make their own arcade games. The ALPHA version - was released in the first week of September, and will at first allow the creation of 2D platform games.

As new features are added, the following types of games will be possible:

Shoot-em-ups (Space Invaders, Scramble, Galaxians)
Retro Games (Tank Blast, Missile Command, Pacman)
Racing (Super Sprint, Horse Race)
Sports (Bowling, Pong, Tennis)
And much more besides...
Absolutely no programming or art skills are necessary. All game entity behaviours are managed by the application using server-based AI behaviours. The user simply chooses the type of game they want to make and then construct it using the game elements for that genre. If you place down an enemy it will act like an enemy and it will know how to move around any scenery that the user places down. All game elements like scores, lives, high score tables and title pages are handled automatically by the app and can be customised by the user.

Once the game is completed the user simply clicks on the "Publish" button and the game is posted into their news feed on Facebook for friends to play and enjoy. If the user chooses to share the game for editing, friends can take the game and make their own version.

Social Arcade started development in mid-April 2008 and will continue to be developed through to 2009 and beyond.

Behaviours and Intelligence
Behaviours encapsulate everything that relates to a game object, including artificial intelligence, animation frames and sequences, sounds, effects (such as particles and events). The user doesn't need to worry about any of this, the application handles it all. Every object in Social Arcade will have a behaviour associated with it that relates to what a user might envisage the object doing. For example, a tank will move around slowly kicking up dust as it moves and shoots cannon balls. Another behaviour will make a lava ground object emit fire and smoke and kill anything that lands on it.

The AI section has been a big focus and at an early stage we realised that we wanted to make upgrading Social Arcade as painless for users as possible. To this end all the Behaviours (which include AI) are stored on the server rather than inside the application. If we want to add a new behaviour we simply write it in the AI language we developed and store it in the database. When Social Arcade runs it pulls the current set of Assets from the database together with their suggested behaviours. This method makes Social Arcade very easy to extend without forcing the users to download a new version each time it is updated with new features.

AI controls all game objects, such as static backgrounds, platform lifts that move back and forth, ladders, enemies that hunt down the player and so on. The foundations for the behaviours are in place and working with the selection of assets we currently have. We would like to cover as many genres as possible, although at the moment we have been concentrating on the "Platform" genre and will expand to cover others later on.
Facebook's Social Arcade can be found here (you will need to sign in with your Facebook login info): http://apps.new.facebook.com/socialarcade/

I don't really play casual games that much, but I enjoy the occasional N+ session even though that game really makes me angry. My girlfriend plays a bit of Zuma every once in a while.

Elastomania is fun too, if played without sound because the effects are terrible. :P

Hehehe, yea it does. Now, if you click on the "[Open in new window]", you would notice that it could just be an arcade joystick by looking at more carefully.

Pocket Tanks is a great one. Any Blitwise game, really.

Doesn't Commander Keen count more as an arcade or classic console game than a casual or indie?
Posted 16 years ago2008-11-02 20:46:46 UTC Post #258050
I'd say it does. It's neither casual nor indie.
