I'm sure it has come to most of your attention that the proud Top Maps section on the front page is constantly hogged up by rather.. how should I put this.. er.. shit. Tis' our slightly short-of-perfect ancestral rating system that once made it possible for those horrible levels to make it amongst our most praised submissions.

However, that's nothing us manly & heroic Map Vault moderators can't tackle! Editing those not-so-awesome entries and disabling their ratings seems to fix this nuisance.

The only problem is: there's far too much scum for the few of us to track down! That's where you come in. Your job is simple: If you find a spam-rated fullbright hollow cube, dust remake or another example of poor mapping in the Top Maps section, report it in this thread and we'll make sure it never surfaces again.

Thank-you for your co-operation.
, the friendly folks from the Map Vault.

P.S: Thanks to Hunter for bringing the issue up again.

Its true that the Top Maps section is full of junk, maps made by users who only signup on TWHL to post their shitty map in the Vault, and never to return again.

So yes, i think its time to cleanup the Completed Maps Vault.

So, if you spot a shitty map in the Top Maps Section, post a link in this thread and we'll take care of it (think Aperture Science Emergency Intelligence Incinerator...).

Good initiative, Daubeh! :)

I can't see any reason why an in-your-eyes shitty dust remake can't make it to the top maps? Voting is a democratic action and if there are a lot of people who like that remake then who are you to say '.. pfft, that doesnt belong in the list'. Obviously there are some maps that got boosted by its own submitter (since that was possible back 'n the days) which is unfair.. but if different people in the current system voted high for that remake then I don't think you should remove it from the list, EVEN if the voters aren't regulars.

/end rant.

If we find at least one coherent review/reason posted by users as to why they've given the map 5* - it won't have its rating disabled.

If you vote for a political party you won't tell why exactly you voted either. A vote is an opinion and an opinion isn't fact-based and doesn't need any description to why he finds it so. Even for the simple fact a friend of the submitter joins this site, gives the map a 5 for the simple fact it's his friend.. it's still an valid opinion, perhaps not a fair one in your eyes but matter of fact is.. opinions aren't always fair.

If you vote for a political party
Bad example. We're not talking choose exhibit A or B, we're talking evaluate and review. Have you seen any film/movie/book reviews that just give them stars and no reasons to back their rating up? Me neither.

Fact is, poor maps aren't supposed to be in the top maps section. However, if the removal of a pointed out "poor" map is disagreed upon by the majority, it won't be removed. Democratic enough? ;>

Freshed: Still, maps that don't have any effort put into them that get 5 stars are unfair to those experience mappers that have worked really hard on their projects.

Here is another one that appears to have gotten a higher-than-deserved rating:
http://twhl.co.za/vault.php?map=905
Ratings disabl'd. Thanks! :]
Posted 15 years ago2009-01-12 15:14:45 UTC Post #261399
Mmm, bad example indeed.. but still, you don't have to 'evaluate and review' for the simple fact that isn't a must-do when you rate. You comment. So 'good map' followed by 5 stars should be just as valid as a long winded review. Obviously, a review is much more prefered and better.. but doesn't mean a simple comment isn't valid enough to count.

Also GP, who says somebody who made a dust remake didn't put effort into their project?

I'm only judging from the screenshot, so I could be totally wrong, but this one looks questionable: http://twhl.co.za/vault.php?map=2988
Edit: Looks like you've played it, Daub. You would know whether it goes in the list or not.

That one stays. Two reviews, even a overly generous rating from me  Thanks - Daub
Posted 15 years ago2009-01-12 15:30:22 UTC Post #261402
True, Freshed, this definitely isn't completely "fair", however we're only disabling the clearly spammed ratings (40 five-stars for e.g) for any submission we consider poorer. And again, if any of you disagree with the disabling of any map, state it here and we may just reconsider.

You really can't efficiently do this any other, 100% fair way.

Judging there are a total of 1386 maps in the vault and thinking at least 20 % is top junk , you would have to remove about 277 maps , aprox 300 maps from the vault.

I don't want ratings disabled, just Mitchrev's ratings gone. He only rated my maps because he knows me, and he states he does'nt even have the ABILITY to play the maps. If there is a way to do that without disabling the ratings, PLEASE do.

Also somebody talked about users that come and go.

There are a total of 4539 users on TWHL atm. Let's say 100 of them are active , which I guess is still a high number .

That means that only 2.2 % of the Twhlers are online dalily .

But again , 100 I think is a big number ...

[EDIT] Notice the poll has a total of 80 votes .

just quickly add something that after 90 days from the last login date and you have no maps in the vault what so ever, it removes the account. all you really need to do is run this once to clean things up.

that'll remove all of those FreeViagra spam accounts

how bout any maps with no lighting automatically go to the unfinished vault too? I would like to see more of the garbage maps out of the "finished" maps section, but i guess that could become a slippery slope and/or quibbling at where to draw the line.

Uhh, what? This is about maps in the vault that were rated tons of times by their author before multi-voting was disabled in TWHL. I deleted the spam accounts aeons ago, and the register page now has a text CAPTCHA to stop more spam accounts from coming in.

(You can see an example CAPTCHA on the contact us page.)

Sjeesh, people are being way to nitpicky cough potatis cough..
1. Maps without 5 stars won't make the top map list. Leave them rest.
2. Friendly votes are opinions aswell, like I explained before.. besides, a map with 1 vote being 5 stars doesn't really matter much either. You won't see them much, if not at all, on the top map list and we're all sense-able enough to know it's not worth much.
Also,

Spammed ratings, and a very crap map, tbh. Yes I downloaded it.

This is a pretty good idea but should be handled fairly. Obvious crap should be removed. Also, I wish there was a way to just not allow spam maps in the vault at all. It seems like no good maps appear anymore, just killboxes or first map junk. I really believe that if TWHL would host its server again and advertise deathmatch events, many great maps would come to the vault. If you guys will just set up some kind of paypal account that we all who agree pitch in monthly to pay for the account, i'd chip in! Just start a new thread asking who will help pay for it. Other wise there seems to be no reason to make hldm maps anymore.. Who wants to put such effort into a great map when a bunch of idiotic half afk retards are most of what you find in random hl servers. If the server comes back, I will promise to make :zomg: five :ciggie: awesome "hopefully top map" deathmatch maps for it!

Or perrrrhaps we could do something really interesting. If the server came back, wouldn't it be really cool to have TWHL's next competition to make a deathmatch map for the server? I know map a deathmatch map has been done in the compo before but this one would be different because its purpose is to be played in the server. Playability along with everything else that makes the map fun and enjoyable and pretty would be considered in the judgement. Think how many cool maps would come out of this that could be played in the server..
