Fair enough, but is this not enough as far as solid evidence goes?:

The story itself is rather obviously just a rhetorical device written by someone trying to push their own view about the argument of evil. I must say, I hate these types of "stories" or examples, where one side is always incredibly dumb and gets owned badly in order to further an argument in a debate. These things appear on both sides of the debate but regardless of who authors them they always sound cheap and insulting. Why not just present the argument on its own instead, without the purely rhetoric story attached?

Which leads me back to my core point: this particular argument has no place in this thread. We're not discussing the existence of evil, we're debating the origin of life.

With a topic like "The origin of life", it is already a religious debate - or at least a philosophical one.

Agreed, and that's usually how flame threads are started, when some arrogant asshole tries to convert another arrogant asshole. It all goes downhill from there.

Except religious topics on TWHL don't usually focus on converting. Every argument we have is always trying to get people to acknowledge all sides.

It's funny because the radical atheists are usually the ones pushing [for lack of a better word] their ideals instead of the Christians on TWHL.

I'd pick a combination of A and B. It's certainly offensive, due to the fact that it makes out the entire American population to be a homogeneously Christian people, despite the fact that there are huge minorities of all religious affiliations within the nation.

However, because the nation is founded on what was (at the time) Christian principles, it could be kept simply as a piece of memorability reminding people of the moral values of the original founders of the democracy. Most western nations, including mine, were founded on fundamentally Christian principles and I see no problem with acknowledging that fact in terms of official statements - whether it be text on money or commandments on the walls of courtrooms. It's not a problem, that is, as long as there's no obvious bias towards Christians or no discrimination of other religions. I believe in a strict separation of religion and state, but there's a difference between acknowledging a historical fact and adopting a state-religion merge.

Holy fuck. I'm pretty sure that's the smartest thing i've ever heard said about that topic.

Consider this. If the universe had no life (not even us), what would be the point of the universe? Nothing can even acknowledge the existance of the universe. For example, Earth would exist, but no-one/nothing would know that. So now consider, thinking along the same lines, how the universe does have life. Still no real purpose that I can think of.

The question isn't "How did we get here?", it's "What the fuck do we do now?".

EDIT: Of course, there's always the chance (quite high chance, actually) that it was just random and we have no true purpose. I guess thats one reason people look for religion, some idea of a goal in life.

Actually, as a lifeform, our main reason is to eat, shit and survive long enough to have sex with the hottest female (or male if you bat for the other team) so we can carry on the strongest genes possible to the next generation. But now that we found tools, it's more than that.

Now we have to learn manners, get an education, get a job, support ourselves... all while eating, shitting, and trying to find the most attractive female possible.

So since we've been doing that forever.
