Why are you calling it snoop.com?

Ooops, my bad. It's suppose to be snope.com, not snoop.com. That's what happens when I try to type too fast, some errors slip through. Thanks for your catch, srry.

I had an RE thing just today, now I think of it. I just had to laugh at some of it.

I rather hear from a true, multi member investigating committee composed from unbiased points of view.
Fair enough, but is this not enough as far as solid evidence goes?:
"Biographies of the man are silent on his having dealt one of his teachers such a comeuppance. Moreover, this famous scientist gets used in legends whose plots call for a smart person, one whom the audience will immediately recognize as such. This venerated cultural icon has, at least in the world of contemporary lore, become a stock character to be tossed into the fray wherever the script calls for a genius."

The story itself is rather obviously just a rhetorical device written by someone trying to push their own view about the argument of evil. I must say, I hate these types of "stories" or examples, where one side is always incredibly dumb and gets owned badly in order to further an argument in a debate. These things appear on both sides of the debate but regardless of who authors them they always sound cheap and insulting. Why not just present the argument on its own instead, without the purely rhetoric story attached?

Which leads me back to my core point: this particular argument has no place in this thread. We're not discussing the existence of evil, we're debating the origin of life.

Edit: Here is another article debunking the story and answering the argument it proposes.
Posted 15 years ago2009-07-15 13:54:03 UTC Post #270210
I agree, I didn't believe that story, and I don't think it was very relevant to the debate in the first place.

It's a self-fulfilled prophecy. Someone said this would turn into a religious debate, and then it did.

With a topic like "The origin of life", it is already a religious debate - or at least a philosophical one.

I don't mind. Hearing other people's views on things is always healthy, even though you can do little to convince (convert, even?) strangers over the internet.

Agreed, and that's usually how flame threads are started, when some arrogant asshole tries to convert another arrogant asshole. It all goes downhill from there.
Posted 15 years ago2009-07-15 16:02:28 UTC Post #270228
Except religious topics on TWHL don't usually focus on converting. Every argument we have is always trying to get people to acknowledge all sides.

It's funny because the radical atheists are usually the ones pushing [for lack of a better word] their ideals instead of the Christians on TWHL.
Posted 15 years ago2009-07-15 16:04:32 UTC Post #270229
a good point, although there are a lot more atheists on TWHL than Christians (at least it appears that way) so perhaps they are a bit intimidated to respond?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Christians are supposed to avoid stuff that is negative or something like that?

In which case, there shouldn't be any Christians on the internet.

Next time I'm leaving town for a few days, I'm going to make sure I have internet access. I never meant to start one of those religion/atheism discussions, so I ask that if it degrades into a flame war, please don't blame me.
Anyway, the question I asked was answered by someone a while ago, so the thread no longer has a purpose.

Sometimes on TWHL... that's just inevitable. ;)

Quite frankly, I like these threads staying open, at least until they take that dive. Most of the time we handle ourselves with some maturity, and then we get zealous.

No flamewar here. As surprising as this is, you're so far having a decent discussion about religion/creationism. On TWHL (?!?)

Do carry on.

Who here has an opinion on the fact that the words "In God We Trust" is found printed on American currency?

A. I like it, it should be there.
B. I hate it, it hurts my atheist sensibilities.

Who here has an opinion on the fact that the words "In God We Trust" is found printed on American currency?
I'd pick a combination of A and B. It's certainly offensive, due to the fact that it makes out the entire American population to be a homogeneously Christian people, despite the fact that there are huge minorities of all religious affiliations within the nation.

However, because the nation is founded on what was (at the time) Christian principles, it could be kept simply as a piece of memorability reminding people of the moral values of the original founders of the democracy. Most western nations, including mine, were founded on fundamentally Christian principles and I see no problem with acknowledging that fact in terms of official statements - whether it be text on money or commandments on the walls of courtrooms. It's not a problem, that is, as long as there's no obvious bias towards Christians or no discrimination of other religions. I believe in a strict separation of religion and state, but there's a difference between acknowledging a historical fact and adopting a state-religion merge.

Strangely enough, I agree. Also, I think that as long as the government isn't biased, then whats on the currency or buildings, are just words, and people should stop whining.
Posted 15 years ago2009-07-16 21:28:25 UTC Post #270330
Well then, somebody should tell that to the ACLU. That liberal fringe group are constantly bankrolling anybody who brings a lawsuit against the government challenging the In God We Trust motto. Oh, and watch out for Michael Moore, he's another radical "I'm always right" jerk.

Fun fact if you didn't already know, but our 1 dollar bill also says "new secular order" in Latin underneath the pyramid.

Zombie said it best, though. It's a reminder of foundation, not a statement.

Consider this. If the universe had no life (not even us), what would be the point of the universe? Nothing can even acknowledge the existance of the universe. For example, Earth would exist, but no-one/nothing would know that. So now consider, thinking along the same lines, how the universe does have life. Still no real purpose that I can think of.

The question isn't "How did we get here?", it's "What the fuck do we do now?".

EDIT: Of course, there's always the chance (quite high chance, actually) that it was just random and we have no true purpose. I guess thats one reason people look for religion, some idea of a goal in life.

Actually, as a lifeform, our main reason is to eat, shit and survive long enough to have sex with the hottest female (or male if you bat for the other team) so we can carry on the strongest genes possible to the next generation. But now that we found tools, it's more than that.

Now we have to learn manners, get an education, get a job, support ourselves... all while eating, shitting, and trying to find the most attractive female possible.

So since we've been doing that forever.
I agree with darkie in that: "What do we do now?"
