Ok I have a virus on my computer so i bought a cd to reinstall the operating system. Doing so will erase everything on my computer so I need to store tons of maps, programs, files, pictures and everything. I was planning on buying a memory card but im pretty sure I can just take a hard drive from another older computer, plug it into mine and just save everything onto it. Is this the best thing to do?

Yeah, just do that. I've done it before, and it's the easiest way besides actually having an external hard drive.

I'd recommend using partitions in the future, though. :)

And use AVG damnit!
Sorry to hear about your virus issues. Hope everything works out!
Make sure to scan the files on the other hard drive before transferring them back to the clean one. You might transfer an infected file.

Don't use AVG, it's rubbish. Try something else. I use NOD32 and it works quite well. None of the memory/cpu hogging of AVG and also way less false positives.

Well i never actually run it in the background. I load it up 2.. 3 times a week before i go to bed and have it shutdown after it scans and fixes. I've been using it since day one with my new rig, and i've had zero problems.

But i still need to go in and re-seat the ram. I'm getting random blu screens.

It was probably the infamous TWHL virus known as Ant's Revenge.

That's deadly. Your browser gets flooded by Pixar characters and you (somehow) develop the need to simply disappear.
