I was just thinking and it would be cool if everyone made a rats version of their own room and we put them all in the server. You could make it to any scale that you wanted and add different paths everywhere. My closet leads to my attick so I would include part of it but make it look neater. Ill begin on mine soon, just need to find my digital camera charger so I can make all of my textures.

Edit-
Iv'e started working on my room and have already made all of the walls doors and windows. Ill post wip soon.

Ah, Mine's not interesting.

I don't think this would work, rat maps are usually gimmick maps.

Well I guess it depends on your room but you can always make secret extra ways like through the walls and what not. Heres my first wip.

Theres a shotgun for scale.

When I want people to join the server at night and play my map i'll just say who wants to spend the night at my house!

God, that actually looks great for goldsource. Those textures look both realistic, and neutrally lit.

I'm in. I've tried before but never had any real drive to finish.
I'll flesh something out and start making some textures after.
What scale are you using?
What's the height of your walls compared to 128 units?

Awesome, glad to here your doing one too tet! My carpet is 112x112. I used somewhat blueish lighting. As for scaleage just measure your room and in hammer say this many squares on the grid at this size equals one foot. In my room I used 128 units equals one foot. Everything is almost exactly to scale except for the height because for some odd reason it looked a little bit too tall.

Hmmmm...
I have wanted to start mapping again...

Zeebs: Are those standard textures?

The walls and blanket are just fifties textures. The doors and carpet are mine though. Just google for textures or take some pics with a dig cam.

Im just so hyped on how fun its going to be to run around in my room when its super huge and theres secret ways everywhere. I already have some really good ideas in mind. Heres the final wip for today. I probably won't show anymore.

This would have made a good competition.

I live on a couch in a living room... nothing really of any interest unless I do the whole thing. I don't think I'm eligible for this. :(

Perhaps you should consider investing in the acquisition of new furniture.

My maps so realistic just laying on my bed looking at my monitor looks as though im looking into my room. I have a lot of ideas that are going to make this map really cool. Post your wip if any of you are doing one.

I am so going to do one. My entire house would make an awesome map. Its old, and there are gaps and holes everywhere so I wouldn't even need to go out of my way for movement ideas.

Big project though. I'll just do my bedroom. I'll have to block off the stairs somehow though since my bedroom has no door as such. :/

Gonna grab my tape measure now. :)

I'm thinking 32 units per inch. Should make for a lot of hiding places.

Yea thats like insect scale versus rat scale. Some people make that scale of map though for counter strike. Its kind of annoying to spend an entire minute just walking across the floor or climbing a ladder but its also cool how tiny you feel. Maybe somewhere in between your scale and mine would be fine.

Its really cool that iv'e only used 16% light data and everythings pretty much done. So I will have lots of room for detail and secrets.

Edit-

Another thing to think about. Make sure if you have a wide screen monitor that its not set to wide because everything will really be skinnyer than it looks to you. I just made a guitar and didn't realize my wide screen was on so I have to stretch it wider.

Has anyone gotten started? post a wip.

I might do a simplified version of my room, and just cut out some of the unnecessary crap.

Also, quick question before I start. A desk lamp that players can turn on to light up the room more. Win or fail?

Actually, I have several ideas on how I could get rather carried away with player controlled lighting...
Posted 14 years ago2009-10-11 15:07:42 UTC Post #274284
No thats good. In my map the player will be able to shoot the light switches turning off and on the lights and fan. I think the more interactibility the better the map. Anyways check out chicco's room inthe vault, its very cool! Great inspiration for this. I didn't know it was a rat's map.

It's been done. I had named it cs_godzilla and it was complete sh!t. The textures looped so much that it slowed everything down and stuff kept disappearing on me even though it was a rather small map. I highly doubt I still have the rmf for further analysis.

Oh good God no! It would be like Biology class, except now it's not only one period a day, it's now invaded your favorite FPS as well! :zomg:

Actually, it would probably just look like Xen, which possibly explains why everybody hated it.
Posted 14 years ago2009-10-12 05:23:41 UTC Post #274303
I didn't mind Xen. Just a bit too maze-y for my liking.

EDIT: I think I'll do the room my computer is in, so I don't have to travel the whole house to get measurements.

EDIT2: What's a good scale using centimetres? I can't work with this imperial crap...

I already did a rat map of my room, buts horribly outdated. Ill run it through to make some improvements.

Edit: Ugh. I don't like it. Best to completely remake it.

Whats with all these sell outs. Were supposed to be like the strongest halflife mapping community by now lol. Well my scale im using is almost too small and I would almost recommend going bigger. Like 160 or 192 units equals a foot rather than 128 units. And @ darkie, there are 30.48 centimeters in one foot. Just google centimeters in a foot or whatever your looking for. Well my maps coming along pretty cool I just went to walmart and baught some tiger barbs so that I would have a fish tank to map. I have lots of cool ideas but don't want to give them all away. Theyll just be surprises.

But you never will.

@ zeeba-G, I hate working with decimals. I'm looking at 6 units per centimetre (~183 units/foot, 600 units/metre), which is close to the scales you're suggesting atm. I'll see if this works.

Just the basics so far. Valve-Textured room with the main furniture. Gonna add the ceiling, A/C vent, radiator, fan/light... etc etc.

best part is, EVERYTHING is in the 8 unit grid, so i can scale up/down as i please. Seems a bit small ATM, but that's just a CTRL+M away!

Does anyone have a general 'material' wad?
Like generic Wood, aluminum, glass, paint.. that sorta thing?
I'm terrible at making them myself, and paint.net hates me.

You've got the wrong airlock Mr. JeffMOD.

I was thinking of piling up a variety of items from HL and macro them until they made a level or something. Who knows.

Yeah, seems to me were all making these on different scales.. But whatever. I didn't touh mine today, was playing supreme commander and fixing my cuz's computer. Maybe tomorrow night:/

It's about 183 units/foot. (6 units/cm)

I want to test this while it's still a skeleton so I don't have to change anything too major if it's bad, but my steam is screwing up.

EDIT: If I change it, it'll be to about 122 units/foot. (4 units/cm)
Which is more like:

MY GOD DARKIE, WHAT ARE YOU DOING??
Posted 14 years ago2009-10-14 17:02:48 UTC Post #274378
Anything and everything is progress. So did anyone check out chicco's bedroom by zemeck in the vault? Its very cool and inspirational. He used a very large scale. I've put countless hours into my map so far making my guitar and everything. I have a lot more to go though like the closets, custom textures, lighting, and more. I am going to do something really cool with my tv as well but it will be a surprise.

Just something to think about. Think about the gameplay of the map. Make it flowable where the player can pretty much get around the entire map without having to climb ladders. Stack books, lean things against tall things that the player can run up. Make things reachable in jumping distance. Add "water". Put a glass of water, a beer bottle, anything the player can swim in. Think about what would be cool to go into if you were small. Maybe the paintball gun you have in your closet. Put it on the floor and map it so that you can walk through the barrel and into the hopper. Map your hamster cage so that you can go into it. Map your fish tank! "I did :D " and make the fish swim around. Use neat ways of movement. In one of the counterstrike rats maps a sponge acts as a bounce. A toy gun can become a turret. Make your lights and fan controllable. Let the player be able to change the channel on the tv.

Most of all add ambience. This really brings life to the map. Make the closet sound like a cave with blue and green lighting. Make the attick floor boards squeek. Make your clocks tick, your computer hum. Just make an awesome map for the server so it will bring in more players!
