I've always been pretty firmly against MMO games, seeing them as total wastes of time. My reluctantly accepted 30 day free trials of WoW and EVE:Online did nothing to fight their case.
WoW was almost completely mind-numbing in its grind, and EVE was just too... Spreadsheety.
Since playing them, I have yet to see anything that has even come close to sparking my interests enough to venture back into the MMO scene... Until now.

Star Trek Online and The Old Republic have my ears perked up.

Star Trek, purely because Star Trek: Elite Force remains one of my favourite games ever. (shame about the sequel.)
And ToR because it's Bioware. Nothing more needs to be said.

So, tell me the reasons why i should or shouldn't give MMOs another chance.

If you think WoW is grindy, you should try any of the Korean MMO's

I've been playing WoW since 2005, and I still like it. The only other MMO I've played is Warhammer, but I felt it was too unpolished. Stiff movements and a static world. PvP was miles better than WoW though.

If you start playing MMO's again, make sure you play with friends, it makes a big difference.

Wait, what? I neither play MMOs nor hate the people who do. I just have nothing to do with them.

Most MMOs are for EMOs, weird Japanese, people with no life or weird manga-reading EMO Japanese with no life. I hope TOR will be an exception, I really love KotOR. I have played WoW and almost got addicted, but then I stopped and realised what a really shitty game it was. I've tried some other MMOs as well.

I have to be honest and to recognize that everybody who asks me what genres of games I play I say "everything except MMO's, I hate them". Lately I discovered I did say that only because my pride, but it's not like that. I think I would enjoy playing WoW, but I just like to keep myself away from the MMO's. Yes, they're addictive. It can get too dangerous when you end up in the hospital, and the nurse asks you if you're ok and you answer "Yeah sure, I'll just use my heal spell". But I don't want to end up one day like this guy.

Maybe in the future I will play MMO's, but just at a casual level. The most RPG-like closest game I play is League of Legends, but I consider it an RTS with a few elements of RPG(mostly because it's level-based). I like it very much.

I can't stand MMO's either but TOR should interest you BECAUSE they know grinding is a bore and capturing 10 chickens is a waste so they're putting meaning into their quests.

In other words it's Mass Effect online. The combat looks teh shit right now though although they have until 2011 to fix it. Sign up for beta at least.

ToR plans something different. No idea what yet.

This is why I keep wanting to give Guild Wars a shot.
Every review praises that there is no grinding in it, and there aren't any monthly fees.

I think something that should be mentioned about MMO's, is that some people's lives have been affected very negatively. Many players that devote too many hours a day to MMO's or any other type of game or virtual worlds for that matter, have had their marriages end in divorce. And worst yet, there's been a few cases where some have committed suicides. A good example of this is the famous case of one Shawn Woolley, who was a devoted fan of Everquest, and thus ended his life by blowing his brains out with a gun due to a relationship break up in the game. I know, some people are crazy, but shit happens for a reason......

You cant totally demean MMO's though.. I really enjoy the premise of ongoing worlds full of actual people, but I dont think a smashingly 'good' one has come out yet.

The one I like the most would have to be eve online.. You cant call it spreadsheety because everything has a weakness. A bigger ship and more guns doesn't mean that its better. I will admit there's a lot of stuff to wrap your head around at first though.

Also.. Guild Wars was the most boring thing I think I've ever played. It doesn't have a good feel. I never got into it.

I think my problem with Eve might have been that 30 days just isn't long enough to get in to it

I agree with this completely. I think TES: Oblivion could have been much better if everyone was a person, so that you didn't get those terribly repetetive conversations. Although the quests would have suffered a lot, nobody's going to stand in one spot for hours so that they can be a guard in someone elses quest.
