You each get a 512x512x512 area to build whatever you want. Make it as nice as possible with textures, lighting, and models if you have them. All of these swatches will be compiled into a map for all to see. Like the rooms maps but a lot smaller and manageable.

The floor of your swatch can be below your plot. Just make sure its a solid 512x512 so it lines up with the surrounding floors. Don't worry about accessibility, though it is a plus, walking space will go between each cubicle.

Give it a try, its just a small area to fill.
I think it would be ok to do more than one plot if people are willing.

512 sounds a bit small too me. How about 1024?

I would love to take part. :D

Hm... Might do this.
But how would I measure 512x512 without counting it out? 3.X doesn't have unit counting on brushes. Or is it on the grid? :\

this is so cool! can you give us a sample desk/cubicle area to decorate, or will we have nonstandard cubicle desks.

The way i saw it when you first brought up the idea, is that you'd give us a blank cubicle area and desk, and we'd provide things like our computer, inbox, chair, toys/decorations, etc.. is this what you meant? (y/n)

Set up the "office" area like NBC's the office: might be awesome. or maybe like the cubicle areas from grandma's boy? ok i'll shut it now but i have to say i LOVE this idea!

I think the idea is to map whatever you want inside a 512*512*512 sized mapping space.

I was going to do Bob Parr's cubicle at Insuricare in a rats type area, but it's too oddly proportioned to fit in the space.

I'm not keeping mine a secret: It's my perfect office. Supercomputers lining the wall, a huge TV hooked up to both my computer and a bunch of classic consoles, (Who doesn't get to urge to bash some koopas while working every once in a while? Or maybe that's just me.) A library overtop, the works.
Screenshots when they get taken.

Relatively 512x512 is really big for a cubicle. At TWHL, we treat out peons grunts "employees" by giving them more space than the average sized cubicle.

EDIT: Actually, more like 3-4. I have supercomputers stacked, so that adds to my first floor a bit.

I hope there isn't a limit to how complicated it can be...because i'm at about 200 solids and only 1/4 done :)

You need many many optimization for that.

I'm pretty sure they're meant to be in just a few maps tops, with hallways between the cubicles.

I should have called this "TWHL Spatial Limitation Challenge" :/

Provide the fully compiled BSP and stuff. When I assemble the whole thing together, I'm going to implement a bind script so that when you press N it goes to the next and P for the previous. You each get an entire BSP, but only 512 cubed. No scenery or anything outside of that except a skybox.

Should've mentioned that earlier.

Wait, so are these all going to be in the same map or seperate maps? Because theres no way it could handle all those textures. And, "512" units is the outside dimmensions of the cube? I just might make my walls 1 unit wide lol.
Posted 14 years ago2010-02-25 02:12:35 UTC Post #279256
Having a dozen "cubicles" in one map would be balls. I don't know why I didn't expect things to get CPU raping. :<

Just make stuff and I'll think of a way to compile it on my own.

The whole micromap thing is fun. Remember the prefab contest? The entries were sick to my standards.

I'm tempted to equip some crowbars, add 10 spawns and try get it on the server. :D (proabably won't)

The only question is, what should I make?...
This'll probs be the hard part.

EDIT: If things like doors and such leave the area (eg. when they open), does it still count?

Lol rim that would be so cool! I was thinking of making a micro awp map for counterstrike, I know it sounds retarded but it would be fun. Now im probably going to make a deathmatch map. I had alreasy started a really cool map but it may change.

A long-ass time ago back when mapping was new and dinosaurs roamed for civil rights, I made a map for CS that was dark until the round started but when they came on you had to pretty much quick-draw and kill your opponents and not shoot your own team.

...of course we played with friendly fire. :P
I used to map for a lan shop too.

I just created something, here it is:
http://twhl.co.za/vault.php?map=5438

I did not really have many ideas... i created this room with low gravity and moving blocks on which you have to jump in order to get to the top of the area, maybe you can put a gun there or you could use this level as a trap and the player then has to get to the top of the area to teleport out. I didn't really create any doors because i didn't know how the map was going to be used.

Hey, Jobama;
(Can't be bothered to dig up the map vault entry)
It's good for a start- A great first map, but a few things bugged me:
It's small and cramped- delete half the cubicle walls so you have thinner walls overall in the main room, and give more walking room. Make sure you're using the full dimentions on the X/Y axis- if you have room, add the guys you missed.
You're also using a very small amount of the allotted space on the Z axis- raise the roof a bit, use the second texture for the wall in that space, and add some details like vents.
It's a good start, but I feel you can do better.

working on mine now. 512 units is a lot bigger than i thought it was. ( i thought we'd literally have cubicle-sized space to decorate in an "office setting" type map. This is better tho ;)

I made the same mistake at first. Then I realized that it would be more like 50 units every direction for that. It's still bigger than I thought.
When I get the will to do it, I'll run a final compile on mine and ship it.

I've nearly finished mine but I need to ask. I don't want the player to be able to enter the cubicle if possible. So will they be able to just walk past and view it from the hallway??
Posted 14 years ago2010-02-27 00:43:18 UTC Post #279328
I am working on something, but it was intended to be part of a chain of cubicles, because it has an entry door and an exit door. It also has some adventure. Are you telling me I'll have to modify it to be self-contained?

As long as the player is within the 512? area. Also, hallway? I thought each cubicle was it's own map.

It wasn't that specifically that nearly destroyed my PC. There's some underlying problem with the mobo (probably from when my previous video card melted) and now installing the latest drivers BSODs me on startup

No. Just make your map as nice as possible. I only need the BSP and your custom resources. You don't need an exit or entrance or any evidence of such.
