Come on this is ridiculous. I was expecting it to fail at big maps compiling(when it doesn't fail, all the compile takes no more than 10 minutes on the upcoming gm_abandonedfield).

But I made a test map for something( it's basically a room).

Guess what? Vrad crashed(task manager showed me 00 CPU activity, and hammer just froze).

What can I do to avoid this? What's causing vrad to do this?

If you got the Steamstartup ############# error, the best thing you can do make everything work again is to go into taskmanager and make sure no leftover Steam services, like compile tools, are running. If there are, just force shutdown on them.

Then restart Steam entirly.

I don't get that error. It's not that problem :). Vrad just... freezes(I said crash but it doesn't show up any error, it's just the freezing and doesn't do anything).

NOW WHAT ?!

I've never seen this in source ever before...

Come on, my map is not that huge, nor does it have a so many entities(I believe this is related to some kind of entity error, but I don't know exactly what).

I feel I'm going

What's this error about ?

Either the map has too many ents, (which you just said is not so) or the map is corrupt.
No free edicts is basically the map has no room/slots for the entities it needs to spawn.
I think the compile tools automatically make brushes with transparent textures into func_brushes, so maybe that's the problem.

What's bizarre is that it loads up the map and after a while gives me this error :\.

[EDIT] This began happening after I turned on through a "logic_auto" the combine ball spawner( an available prefab). It's obvious that I should remove this(which I can't now because it's late), but why could it do this?

Do you have many sounds playing/starting at the same time?

It spawns them too rapidly for the map, maybe? Infinite loop of balls?

The horrors of source mapping.

It's not horror. But it kinda tells you sometimes "performance vs. imagination bitch!", which sucks :(.

What do you mean "valve fucked it up"? From one day to another, I'm getting more and more excited about the I\O system in it. It's much more fun to design a map for source now that I think of it.

He means the recent updates broke the SDK. You may not have the problem if you, like me, use offline mode often and don't update as a result.

yeah. valve updated the SDK for the L4D 2 and TF2 authoring tools.. they added a bunch of features to hammer and my machine flips a proverbial shit when i go to run it.
HL2 ep 2, ep1 and regular HL2 dont work properly. HL2 works, but doesnt compile, and i cant be bothered to get a batch compiler.

I've moved on to SPARK for NS2 mapping, and a friend of mine (video game engineer) and i are working on a game from scratch with the UDK

I've been boning up on my blender and photoshop skills to import models and stuff into the Unreal3 engine.

I destroyed the bug. It was, as I expected, an infinite loop of balls(this sounds funny). I deleted the ball spawner.

Btw, what's the "graphics improvements" about in the new update?

[EDIT] I don't know about you, but hammer runs fine for me(at least for source 2007, but I tried source 2009 and that one works fine too).
Interestingly, the last times I compiled all went fine. Though I don't know why from time to time vrad or vvis just stops working...

Sometimes it helps deleting the entire SDK (don't forget to backup your assets and delete any left-over folders) and then do a clean reinstall. That way you can be sure that you have the latest clean version of the SDK.
I did that when Valve released that latest big update where the came up with three different engins (2006, 2008, 2009).

I only mapped for HL2DM after that and got no problems with the SDK.
