do concept - lots and lots of concept
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-28 16:39:41 UTC Post #17746
That happened to me for a while (before I knew about TWHL). I just played a lot of cs and other games. Then eventually I got the idea for big_city. That got me back into Worldcraft.
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-28 16:40:17 UTC Post #17747
So the moral of this story is: your probably going to get back into mapping if good ideas pop into your head at random.
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-28 16:40:43 UTC Post #17748
Which probably isn't healthy.
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-28 17:14:28 UTC Post #17757
It isn't. One idea is a very healthy thing. My problem is I have too many ideas.
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-28 17:33:44 UTC Post #17762
Same here. I'll actually be in the middle of something when I get an idea. Most of them go to waste though. Like cs_control.

yours to :D

Change you goal for mapping... instead of trying to make a map, try to break Worldcraft or VHE or whatever you use. Instead of doing things that have been proven true try to show what can't be done or what shouldn't.

Can't be done:
adding custom models to Richochet using env_sprite or cycler_sprite
Can be done:
make a env_beam between 2 monsters in regular HL.
I used 2 alien slaves and the beam connected to their feet.
yes.... I was bored
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-28 21:56:40 UTC Post #17814
Hmmm.... you could make it look like they were carrying something, and set them to walk together!

(An idea pops into bratty's head)

your sick, really :)
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-29 14:05:14 UTC Post #17900
my problem is that my ideas can't be done in HL due to the engine :(

so i just sit in a black corner waiting for HL2 to come out...
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-29 14:52:38 UTC Post #17905
I'm lucky. I have one idea right now, and I intend to stick with it for a long time.
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-01 16:58:21 UTC Post #18032
its always better to finish one map than to start 10
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-01 17:42:14 UTC Post #18042
i agree :)
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-01 18:09:35 UTC Post #18043
Would someone like to share one of there ideas as i have no ideas and thinking of an idea is like winning the lottery with me because it never happens. :)

make a scientist torture one, or make a whole bunch of places that the player can watch from with glass (So he is protected) and have it so when he presses a button, he gets to watch monsters, grunts, and scientists kill each other. :badass:

What I tend to do is map for other mods, play a completely different game for a while, i.e. Morrowind! - And make levels for that, (cool), if you get bored of these proceedings then swith back to hl, you are bound to have some new mapping ideas after this break.
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-07 09:38:51 UTC Post #18627
anyone can map for New Problem, but I tend to change some things in others maps, to make it fit with the rest.

Dude making weapons isn't easy! That takes modeling. Maybe u can modify them? Not sure though

I can code weapons, and I can model them as well (or at least I am learning to!).I have some great ideas for maps but I'm not sharing. I currently working on my biggest map yet. I have 2 sketch pads full of ideas and loads of crappy test maps for it. I am planning to make plans and ideas for another 2 weeks before I start on the real decent version!

That's how you create a great map. Planning. Just plan the same map for ages!
m0p m0pIllogical.

u mentioned mapping 4 morrowind. tell me bout it. is it similar to hammer? i hav morrowind on xbox, is it worth buyin it 4 Pc so i can map 4 it?
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-08 16:12:14 UTC Post #18769
I think that Morrowind is worth the buy.
Its is priced down a lot nowadays, only 20 euros or so.
The game is really really cool to play, it is SO huge, I just cant over state that, its just insane.
It also is very easy to make maps and mods (called plug-ins, in the Morrowind community). You can run basicly an unlimited nummer of plugins at the same time, and you can add your creations to the game.
Files are small and you can do what you want.

People are even making a TC based on Lord of the Rings which is supposedly (going to be) extremely large and cool.

It is however a hell of a lot different than Hammer/Worldcraft. From what i can remember, you can just select pieces and put em all together, just save it as a .esp file, and on the Morrowind startup screen tick the box next to "myhouse.esp" or whatever and BAM, you're done. Very easy, although, you can makeit as complex as you want it to be.

You could just make a new trader NPC and script the dude so that he will carry your stuff and follow and defend you.

You can make your own castle, with all the cash and weapons available, thus making the game very easy ;-)

Also, most of the doors are teleporters and the inside of a house is in theory a totally different part as the outdoor world.
This allows for some interesting stuff.

For instance, you can make a treestump in the outside world, with a small hatch in it, that leads to the interior a huge and gothic church.

All very fun, if you have a relatively good system.

As a reference:
i have a 2.6 GHz P IV
512 MB DDR RAM
128 ATI 9600 TX
120 GB 7200 rpm HDD

and the game runs almost perfect on my pc, IF i turn shadows off...
But hey, if thats the price i have to pay to be able to fight bizar monsters with cool allies, while flying over a world that will make Peter "LOTR" Jackson drool, who cares?

Conclusion: just buy it, where we go from there, is a choice i leave up to you...

Morrowind is great, but its got the most basic combat system Ive ever seen in an RPG
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-09 19:07:21 UTC Post #18874
I understant what pepper is saying. do you mean help me pepper? I'd be glad to have anyones help skinning. :)
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-10 17:37:34 UTC Post #18989
Morrowind's combat might be basic, it IS realtime, and the depth comes form having the right equipment, keep distance when carrying a bow and to have good armor, when wielding and axe.
Having and using the right magic/potions is also a matter of tactics, etc. etc.

believe me, morrowind is HUGE
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-11 05:12:56 UTC Post #19037
no f?ces, I spent several months playing through it and levelling up my character till nothing could actually kill me ever, no chance in hell
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-11 14:36:08 UTC Post #19086
i have gotte nto that point in Morrowind now.. takes the fun outta the game.. there should be levelled monsters to make the game more of a challenge..

and cliff racers should be banned from the game...
Posted 20 years ago2004-03-11 15:31:38 UTC Post #19099
Morrowind, Get it NOW! When I'm not playing Half-life, I get sucked into the addictive world of Morrowind. I have just made myself a wooden tree fort in the middle of nowhere with characters etc. I also recommend that you should get the game of the year addition because that way you can get Tribunal and Bloodmoon addons.

And yes, I agree, Cliff racers are thee most annoying sons of bitches you'll ever encounter!
