Not sure if this is the right forum to post this thread but here goes :)
So i imposed a challenge to myself to make a map every week this whole year.

Each map will be playable (CS only) and small-medium in size.
If anything interesting pops up i will post a screen in the WIP thread :)
Please suggest what idea/thing i could try in the next map

------Idea bank------
So far none :(

dev_lol01 - will be posted later
cs_lol2 - http://twhl.info/vault.php?map=5731
Since i don't want to spin my head thinking up 51 names i will just name each map lol and its respective number (ex. lol05)

Place your bets on how long you think i will last :P

I really don't know if that's a good challenge. because if you really want to make a GOOD map its going to take longer than a week to make. I'd say one map every 2 weeks at LEAST

I think as an exercise, it's a fine idea. If i didn't have any current projects, i'd do it myself.

The only thing i would say is, try to make a complete level, everytime, regardless how small it is. This will help condition you to finish projects, something i really need to do myself :P

Life level = non existant. How can you make a flippin map every week? Unless you call a map a box with a light and player start, you'd have to spend like 15 hours every week, which is just way over the top.

you can do a lot in a couple hours, but of course, none of these levels are going to be gigantic.

You're just going to end up with 51 sub-par maps.

When I map, I map to create something good, to improve and to beat what I previously created. I take lots of time and put lots of detail into my maps. I don't spam average and crappy looking maps, because spamming average and crappy looking maps won't make me look good.

Good luck with that. I started a map last year around this time, and it's 85% finished.

I don't really mind the whole idea of making a map every week, so long as the goal is to learn something new, and you have some sort of bigger plan for the stuff you learn.
So say alongside the 51 weekly tests, release 3-4 proper finished maps a year, where you utilize what you've learned.

I should try something like this, as CT said, to condition myself to finish maps. I've never actually made a map. Basically just concept tests and half finished rooms, when I have a cool idea but have no idea how to spin it into a map.

A really good idea is to draw a concept of a map, evaluate it, and then choose what specific parts of it you'll do per day. That's actually kind of smart...

These kind of goals are ok, but don't limit your time to only a week per map. It's possible if you don't work or have school I suppose but if you want to get better, focus on quality not quantity. What I do for example, last summer break I sat down and decided what I would map. I decided on three projects, a micro hotel/ sleeping cell building for a campus, a pool and a beachhouse. The beach house I also built a real life model of it. I produced some quality maps but didn't restrict my time, but at the same time sort of dictated how much work I would out put. And it was pretty successful as you can see, my pool map was map of the month. This gave each map about two and a half weeks though they may have been done faster.

1 map a month is much more prosperous, gives you time to get into it, get inspired and all that.

agreed, but the more time you have the more time you procrastinate. 1 or 2 weeks doesn't really leave for any fucking-around time. =)

But everyone is different. Some people may be able to cope with time restrictions and procrastinating better than others. I'm the textbook procrastinator, that starts everything late and then rushes at the end. It's in my blood. =)

I think it's a great idea if you can keep it up. Would be interesting to put them all together at the end to see what the look like in progression.

Having said that I don't think you will last as stated by many others. I would suspect a great start with some sort of ultimate break somewhere along the way. Even if I had time, which I don't, I don't personally think I could last creating 52 maps in a years time. There just wouldn't be any quality there.

Now! If you really want to get creative and utilize an idea that I have had and tried to introduce to Kuma Games. The didn't like it and they suck anyways. But, anywho.....

Write episodic maps that will utilize some or all of the same materials created for the whole series. It doesn't have to be big either. You just have to have some kind of story line and some main characters that will last throughout the series. Obviously creating a whole city would take a minute so you could start out small like I said and create "sets" that the actors would work from. You get the point....

good luck with dat!

Agreed with Rimrook. But do what you want, you might be the next nipper! ;) Well the guy's come a long long way and he did it with a simlar method. That guy was a map factory.
