Oh my god, that was awesome.
Good difficulty level, good upgrade system (Loved the duck), and the Super Metroid-style area overview on the bus routes screen was a very nice nostalgic touch.
The bosses were decently challenging and the characters were excellently written and designed. (Loved the afro, by the way)

You obviously put a lot of love and hard work into every sound, every tile, every line of dialog, and it pays off. From the imaginatively designed puzzles to the in-jokes and references that will leave outsiders like me chuckling and the people in the game who were there for them rolling around on the floor, the entire package is chock full of your dedication, sense of humour, and just plain fun.

The only major bugs I can think of are small one or two pixel tile misplacements that get the player hung up on the edges, but I think those are all isolated on the highway stage.

All in all, excellent demo, and I'd just like to say that SMJ is one of the biggest games I'm looking forward to.

Answers
  • you have to find the a lot of the abilities.
  • press up (w) did you check out the mandatory control screen that popped up when you clicked new game?
  • debug cheats are disabled for the demo and there will never be a public version with them enabled.

I played it on the weekend, but I haven't had a chance to comment properly yet.

I liked it, it had a good level of difficulty and I liked the fact that the characters are all real people. Especially that particularly handsome fellow at the start. :P
I especially liked the minigames, and I hope there are more of them in the final version.
A minor complaint is that the town feels kind of empty. There are only a few people there, and some of the shopkeepers disappear after you talk to them which adds to the emptiness. If it is related to the story though then it is excusable.
Overall I would say I really liked it. Beforehand SMJ and The Core were tied for first place of the things that I am looking forward to most, but now that I've had a chance to play SMJ it has come out into the lead.

There is no race between The Core and SMJ, I'm eager for The Core to come out.

Town as it is now is one giant place holder. There are so many changes in the story that affect the town and things need to be set up carefully. That's why its blah at the moment.

Glad you liked it though TJB!

I'd like to try it out, but I think I'll wait 'til I'm back home in a couple of weeks.

It's not a race, I'm just trying to subtly say how good it is to release demos Archie and Urby. :P
To be honest though, HL mods aren't really suited to demos unless there is significant coding, so I don't mind The Core not having one, as the plentiful media releases are enough to make everyone excited for it.

No, it's a race :nuke:

Question:
After building this demo, would you hazard a guess as to how long you'd think it would take one person to make a Metal Slug type game?
