What Discostu said, pen & paper all day long. Tho i've used MyPaint a couple of times on an old laptop. I liked it because it had no canvas, you can keep on expanding as much as you want.

If you stick to paper, these are my weapons of choice.

And my favorite, notice the red/orange pen is the fine point version, harder to find.

As long as you have paper and anything to draw with youre good to go. I always have paper near my keyboard to draw or write down things since i can't stand doing this on a pc for some reason.
Later i compile the useful info like passwords and crap to a .txt file for archiving if i feel like i could lose the paper.

Sounds good!

What would you guise recommend for a good sketch pad? I'm thinking a blank composition notebook, but maybe I'll get a nice sketch pad a little bigger..

Plain white A4 or A5. Maybe both.

I second the Zebra Pencil! It's a very solid feel, but light enough to manipulate easily. Zebra also has a SUPER nice gel pen variant of the same body style. It was my favorite pen until I found the Uniball Jetstream.
I'd also recommend those sketchpad block erasers. My Eraser of choice has been a STAEDTLER rasoplast. It's great for notebook or printer paper, however I've never used it on a legit sketchpad so who knows.

Being in production meetings a lot really makes you appreciate nice pens.

My favorite notepad is simply a 8.5" x 11" piece of cheap copy paper folded in half. Every time I buy a sketchpad or notebook the paper is too grainy for my taste.

Sometimes i'll fold the paper a second time to fit in my pocket, but I draw on it folded once. With it completely unfolded the paper is too flimsy and the canvas is too big but with it folded once it is just right. ;) Try this method with the previously mentioned pens/pencil and you'll crank out some art.

Sorry for veering off topic, I'd ask Rimrook about the apps.

@Tet, i'll have to try the gel version, I was always curious about it.

@Captain, looks cool what is it? You should consider industrial design.

I like your printer-paper method, Zeeba, thanks! Also the sketch is supposed to be a Hammer-spaceship thingie:

When it's done, I want it to look more-angular and sleek, less-round and clunky, e.g., think the styling of a Thor from Starcraft II.

It's too phallic for your own good, Captain.
