Where can I get a good program that will let me rip maps for my server
If you don't know what "ripping" a map is, its when a server takes a mp and spiffys it up with different lighting, replaced entities, different skies, extra stuff ec. Its very cool. So, uhhhh where can I get one? Anyone know?

Do they exist? It sounds mysterious and impossible to me...

Nope Ive seen it more than enough times. Its not a new map, just an edited version of the original that you dont have to download.

One time I went into a tfc server and 2fort was all cool. There were random air raids on the bridge with effects and everything. there were turrets which you needed a battery for, the ammo packs looked different (just for 2fort and no other level) and there were skelitons in the water and near the flags. Oh, not to mention somewhere on the map is said "custom 2fort by blah blah blah: based on 2fort"

Its way too much to just be a bunch of plugins, it must be a special program
Posted 20 years ago2004-06-16 23:49:48 UTC Post #34047
It must be. I'd have thought that someone went back into Hammer and fixed it up...

RipEnt (availiable through Nem's Tools). it used to be included with zhlt, but alas, no more.

you can edit maps in notepad, but you need to know the co-ordinates for where you want to place things (use Hammer).

skies are easy. bombsites/hostages are easy. models + sprites need to be downloaded by the client though. as they are essentially not an entity

you dont have to download
Know what you mean. UK2 have a customised version of cs_militia with a UK2 ad sprite. Wish I knew how.

... they have that in all there maps. they make the sprite. the find a good place for the sprite to go, note the co-ordinates. and write the sprite into the maps entity list.
it's not brain science.

Okay, genius, what's the file these entities go into without re-downloading the BSP?

If you ever play on BEGINNER'S PLACE hldm then you see crossfire has an alien sky.

you insert an env_sprite into your maps entity list (using RipEnt - which extracts the entity properties/co-ordinates/keys/etc into a dos file, which can be editied through notepad ;) )

you key in the co-ordinates for where you want the sprite to appear in your map.

you set the sprites path to sprites/yoursprite.spr. put the sprite in your server's sprite folder (using any ftp accessing program).
the client will automatically download the sprite and hey presto! in-game custom sprites.

the same goes for models, but it's easier to use a model that won't need clipping, which only complicates the matter further.

Metamod coder botman made a .dll for metamod that's called Stripper (now it's stripper2). You can add or subract any entity in the game. It comes with a tutorial that's pretty self-explanatory, with examples. http://planethalflife.com/botman/downloads.shtml is the website of the download. Camper'sWelcome is a server that uses it extensively to add enough ammo, longjump, health, and armor to make smaller multiplayer maps playable by many people. And HURT LOCKER (maybe Loon's Lair, don't remember exactly) has assassins and other monsters spawning (seemingly randomly) during the multiplayer game. By the way, it was designed for multiplayer. And be sure to use Stripper2 and not Stripper.
