i have a brush in my map where half of it is very dark (not quite black but darker) while the rest of it is normal. it looks like i have this black strip in the middle of my map for no reason...any ideas?

Well if its darker than black thats probably why.

first of all, use an actual quote. Second of all, wth is that avatar? third of all, hi!

You probably have a wall in the middle thats not parralel to the problem wall but they arent touching. And you probalby have a light on one side of that wall so it only lights up the one side of the problem wall. You get it?

Er, he's been around quite awhile Luke ;)

Steve: this is caused by face splitting, and you may have a detail brush on the floor breaking up its surface. Tie it to an entity, or search the forums for 'face splitting'.
