CS is definitely not the best mod.

cs has been updated more than halflife.
i never liked teh doom series (unless i was seriously stoned - I mean, blue key red key yellow key, kill teh boss.. gets repetitive after 20 levels)

i must admit that CS is popular because
1. It's a MOD of Half-Life which was no. 1 game of all time
2. Its got internet play so you can play with your friends
3. It has all kinds of maps including :- Ka maps (knife only), de (defuse bomb maps), cs maps (rescue hostages)
others that are funny, lame and weird
The only thing is that CS can get very repetitive and there are cheaters, hackers etc that can spoil gameplay!
Also you can get banned from CS just by having some program that Steam thinks is a cheat thing even if your innocent!
Half-Life is a great 1 player game that has an actual storyline to it with scares, laughter and just plain weird!
now when HL2 is released a lot of CS jockeys are going to either try Half-Life 2 and then straight away onto CS:S or just play CS:S as soon as its in their grimey grasp!
And then its straight back to CT's and T's fighting it out untill the timer has gone to 00:00
Hl2 will be a huge adventure with many new mapping techniques and a lot more entities to use!
Finally Yes CS maybe the best 'Mod' in the World because so many people play it but HL will always be number 1 to so many people! across the globe!
