Is uploading the same as downloading, meaning is there a chance of getting a virus from uploading or is it only possible to get a virus when downloading?

It's possible to get viruses from more than just downloading. Trojans, spyware, and nasty dialers like to infect your computer when you use IE or low-security browsers. It's especially bad when you don't run a firewall or Virus Scanner with latest updates.

Uploading itself won't give you a virus, but if you upload an infected file, then you can give other people that virus and then they get angry.

So uploading has no chance of getting virues on my computer, saying it is virus free before the upload.

Yep. Uploading can't hurt you at all.... It can hurt other people if the file you uploaded is full of viruses.

Uploading = moving files from your computer to another host.
Downloading = moving files from a seperate host to your comp.

Very hard to get virus moving files FROM your computer.

Yep. If you're paranoid about viruses and spyware and that, make sure your computer is adequately protected. Download programs like Adaware for spyware (always backup spy programs with another spy program. I recommend SpyBot Search & Destroy) and Zonealarm for one of the best firewalls around. It's free and it consistently beats firewalls that are on sale in tests. Always keep your virus scanner up to date as well.
