This little trick works best with Counter Strike (thanks to its command menu) but can be done with any mod.

1. Get RazorLame and convert your favorite songs to wav format.
2. Convert the playback rate and sound quality of the wav to fit the needs for Half Life playable wav's (though I have learned that 22kHz with an 8bit mono actually works fine)
3. Make a new folder in your sounds folder (mine is siomply called music)
4. Move all your songs into your sounds/<name> folder
5. The Following steps are for CS only:
-1. Open your commandmenu.txt
-2. Add the following lines at the bottom
"5" "Play Songs"
{
"1" "<name of song>" "speak <folder name>/<song name>"
"2" "Stop songs" "stopsound"
}
-3. Add songs to the list by simply adding more sommands to the list
6. The following steps are for other Half Life games:
-1. When you join a server type in your console:
speak <folder name>/<song name>
-2. To stop your song type stopsound in the console

Note: By typing stopsound in the console all sounds around you that you can hear will also stop but will start up again when they reach their cue points or when they are triggered again.

Another Note: You must stop a song before you start another one, otherwise you run the risk of a sound overload.

Why use this instead of winamp?
Because winamp eats your computers memory.

Have fun!

Seems kind of complicated, yet, i guess, its worth it.

Good job. :D

WinAmp doesn't eat that much memory (Heck, I use iTunes (iPod, don't ask) and it doesn't affect my games' playability), and the difference in sound quality you get with a full-fledged music program is much better.

An interesting idea nonetheless, and would be good on computers with very little memory, I suppose.

Well for me, if I run wniamp while running cs or Half Life or Sven coop or Natural Selection etc (too many games listed!) my game lags. Im sure a lot of other people have this lag problem running winamp and hl at the same time too.
Posted 19 years ago2004-10-30 06:50:37 UTC Post #70576
I always run music on windows media player in the background on games I play, doesn't lag or anything.
Posted 19 years ago2004-10-30 06:53:39 UTC Post #70577
me too, WMP allways, except in Sven.
never lags for me, Maybe you need a new computer Worldcraft Dude ;)

Get HL sound selector, which is much easier.
Noobs.
Posted 19 years ago2004-10-30 07:02:43 UTC Post #70579
And besides running HL and Winamp causing lagg only means your computer is down right shit.

Yeah, that's probably right. And converting to WAV files? Doesn't the increase the file size? Winamp runs fine when Half-Life is run and vice-versa.

God you guys are sad. Anthony I KNOW you didnt just say the wavs will be bigger than the mp3. READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS. And you can't control windows media from cs, so if a song comes up that you are bored of, you are powerless to change it.
Posted 19 years ago2004-10-30 09:45:37 UTC Post #70599
Pff, just don't use winamp :

Sorry didn't quite read it, but at the quality it's going to sound absolutely awful. Don't like a song? Take it out of the playlist first! Simple!

I used HLAMP a long time ago... Don't know if it still exists/is ported to steam.

If you minimize you lose your sound. And I dont know about any of you but i get annoyed hearing the same song over and over having no control over it other than to close cs all together.

Sound quality? 22khz with 8 bt mono sounds almost no different than the mp3 itself.

Are you deaf or is your soundcard from late '80s :P

You don't lose sound if you minimize unless you still use WON.
