I wouldn't restrict people to rooms.
Instead we can just say "Don't use more than 10% of the map max limits."
That'd be better, so we'd have 9-10 people per .bsp.

here's my 2 cents.

why pass the map around at all? isn't that why the first monstrosity took so long to make? why not, instead, just come up with a standard door size that everyone must adhere to. that way everyone can get working on their part right away and not feel rushed. also, it will be less likely that people will lose interest since they wont have to wait months to get their hands on the map and begin. all you'd need to do is assign everyone an entry and exit direction (n, s, e, w) and maximum grid coordinates. then have someone edit the final product and connect all the peices. voilla

and for all the people wanting to do hl2, why not get together and do your own project?

Haz:
I know, I know, but I don't just want someone dominating the whole thing. Each person adds a small part to kind of show off their mapping skills. That way we have a map that includes all of the interested mappers here's style. Anyway, who defines a room ;)
Anon:
We have come across that idea before, and as advertising as it may seem, I think people should be able to add onto what others put before them. This way everyones map together makes a linear path, rather than random maps stuck together, which was shown in places on TWHLmix1. Good idea, but I don't think thats what I want to do.
You are welcome to join if you'd like... Just send me a resume ;)

So, now that I know that kol also participates, I will contribute something, too. :)

What'd you think of a sequel in the doc's lab? Many people said that they would've wanted to fight the intruders. So, you shall get your chance! :badass:

I hope I can keep my part (certainly containing of more than one room) within the restrictions.

Why not build a map each and then put them together or something

Habboi: Anonymous already said that ^

BL: I have already got in mind an idea which I'm trying out today to see if it works. I mean, of course it depends on what the map before me is based on, but If this idea fits it might be quite cool.

If we want to go to a completely new section, is it ok to have aliens invade the map, block off everything, and create a portal that takes you to a new sections?

/me sent the resume.... You better accept me, or else I'll.... I'll .... I'll cry, waaaahahahahaaaaaaaa sob sob

Btw, I truly think that each part should follow the previous, and I won't start my part until I get an Idea of the part before mine.... (when, and IF I am selected, of course)
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-05 16:23:52 UTC Post #81881
... jeez, if I say "part" one more time, I'll go insane.
I shall part with you now...
PS: sorry for the double post

Great to see this thing gathering momentum :P

Here's an idea: How about you start making your map now - but start small, because remember that it has to be small in order to get other people in too.

Then you can just do something like vassy said: a teleport.

Can't wait to get a new HDD so i can start maping for this thing :D

Here's what i've planned so far:

3 Areas separated by teleports: 1 area was to be a wormhole sequence ( a kind of an intro.. but not any more because i can't do the first map..)

Area2: Grunts, lots of combat
Area3: My take on Xen: with more combat and a few surprises :P

Gonna max out the Texture memory & brush entity limit and force you to a levelchange - MUHUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :x ;) :P
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-05 20:45:11 UTC Post #81943
Oh, just got an idea: We should be able to add to other people's stuff: But in moderation and with proper communication with the original author.

I mean things like r_speed reducing techniques, or maybe an improvement in brush structure ( that doesn't change appearance, but runs better - and yes, there is such a thing)

Another thing is NULL / HINT textures, you should be able to change those if needed

And Little tiny bits like env_sounds (that a lot of people forget) and env_glows around some lights.

Maybe even go as far as changing the difficulty a bit to give the map a bit of balance overall.

All of that with the original author's & the team's consent.

I'd go so far as to say if a certain area is lagging, and you know how to fix it, or something, do it, since it'll help in the long run.

Well, as long as the previous mapper agrees.

Do not just blindly "improve" everyone's maps, like what happened last time.

May I apply?

I think, just look at my part of the first map, the cloning machine.

Posted 19 years ago2005-01-06 15:05:18 UTC Post #82061
I don't think you should edit other peoples work, as then it isn't really theirs, if you see something like a big gaping whole with 4 squillion leaks, then tell the author and get said author to fix it by themselves.

Just work on your own bit and then we shall see how it all turns out in theend, if you all start working on each others work, things could get messy and nasty very quickly.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-06 16:15:19 UTC Post #82070
G_KID,
are you going to apply?

Chow, you will see the theme when you get it ;) ...

... if you get me some screenies so that I can officially let you into the mix knowing that you can map ...

BL, am I making the first part of the map now, then?

/me is very happy :)

...and I'm 4th, right?
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-06 16:58:25 UTC Post #82085
Hmm...
Im thinking about it, I don't know really, I haven't mapped for about 6 months properly...I am starting mapping again, the map is going pretty well IMO, and will be in vault hopefully with due time and extensive error/bug/glitches checks...

Hmm...I guess it can't hurt to have a stab at this..
But I don't really have any screenies to prove that I can map, as my computer recently got wiped, so no maps for me...
So if you want me in it, you'll kinda have to take a chance on me being able to map.. as I can't prove it at the present time..sorry.

Guy's
The thing that will bring this undone is changing direction/ideas/format.

Stick to the original plan.

I really liked anon's suggestion, (Umm, tried something like that once before) but the thing that is brilliant about the MIX is that everyone get's to see the previous room and can learn from that.
Ok, so that is unfortunate for the builders of the first rooms, but I am sure they learned heaps anyway.

Umm.. This isn't a change in structure, just line-up...
Why don't you get the most talented mappers to start the MIX off??
That way everyone get's some benifit.

TWHLmix proved the theory when you played it.
Things got better the deeper you went into the map.

Do not lose sight of what you are trying to do.
Best of luck.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-07 18:03:39 UTC Post #82304
I appreciate your pity, Andy :)
And I won't lose sight, my map should be great.
