Im a horrible skinner, and now im stuck on skinning the handle, so if anyone is willing to skin this i would apreciate it.
Here is what i got :|

As you can see its a bit....crappy.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-19 10:24:16 UTC Post #84551
Well, it could be worse... take a screen from a different angle so you see it.

I've got no idea how to skin models, so can't help you there.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-19 11:19:06 UTC Post #84561
Its the same as texturing, lets say you got one 512x512 skin then you see the outlines of the model:
uvmap

The big advantage it is that your texture doesnt need to be tiled. and you can put more detail in it.

The file format is the same as hl textures: a 8-bit bmp file. wiht a max size of 512x512.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-19 14:08:04 UTC Post #84581
Actually those animations are VERY common, you wouldn't be stealing them.

The skin looks ok, but you already said you weren't much of a skinner. Why don't you take pictures from the actual knife and put them on the model? The original picture has tons of angles.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-19 14:39:10 UTC Post #84585
such a skin would be even worse.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-19 16:19:13 UTC Post #84605
wierd knife but not bad.its true that i cant model for hl but i would like to know
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-19 18:06:24 UTC Post #84614
Ok, I've got some ideas for you to improve on that skin of yours.

Comparing the real knife to the model, your blade is a bit dark, but the skin itself it good. Open it with wally and the brighten bush or whatever its called on the main blade. The handle should be easy. Make it a few shades lighter and put a ton of lines in it, so it looks like a grip.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-20 10:05:38 UTC Post #84665
ys i have noticed that myself, ik just redraw it, then it will look better instead of doing brightness/contrast.

Excellent model by the way, looks very like its real life counter part!

Its not finihsd, that was a quik test compile, in fact it is very ugly! The arms are dis-alignd so il have to re-align them.

Nah, CS:S goes for a higher level of detail.
Looks really nice pepperz0r, only it's alittle too bright and the knifes textures are kinda flat.
Posted 19 years ago2005-01-22 15:10:58 UTC Post #85067
Im not going to use those animations Wcdude. Im planning on doing the animating and texturing in the next 2 weeks. But i cant say how good the texture will look.

The animation will be completely different because the knife is hugh compared to others knifes i have seen.

<<<<<<REVIVE>>>>>>

I revive this thread because im planning to finish the knife soon.
I finaly got around learning to do a decent uvmap, so i can do a good one now. But im not the best skinner so im planning on setting up a competition in wich people can create there own skin for the model, if the skins are decent enough i can distribute them wiht the model, But im not sure if anyone would like to participate in a contest.
The only thing you would need is a paint program like The gimp ore Photoshop ore Paintshop pro, it atleast need to have the ability to save your skin as a 8bit bmp.

Alright, here is the bmp, just create a colour over the group, that becomes the skin, here is a simple layout of the skin and what part the colours are, il set-up a model for people later so they can see there skin in model viewer.
skin:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~dewitnel/peppersplanet/uvmap.bmp
(its bmp for quality reasons)

The bleu parts are the handle that the person will hold it in, the grip.

The red and light bleu are the knife parts. You can slice wiht this, feel free to add a skin wiht and wihtout blood.

The green part is the base of the knife, here is the blade attached to.

The yellow and the purple parts are the wings attached to the knife.

Save it as a 8bit bmp, any photoediting program is fine, i recommend one wiht layer support, dont have money to buy one? Use The gimp:
http://www.gimp.org/
There is also a windows version.

Here is the model:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~dewitnel/peppersplanet/uvknife.mdl

And a tutorial by vassy:
http://www.twhl.co.za/tutorial.php?id=59

And a reference picture:

Good luck and post you Work In Progress[WIP] pictures in this thread!

GIF wouldn't involve loss of quality in that instance.

I might actually have a go at this myself.

No, not yet. it is just compiled as a static model to save me some time and provide a model to people, if you want you can put it in your map wiht a cycler.

I made a quick one for me to use, I was wondering if you could make it especially for me as a reward :D

You don't have to but you know...

I could have done better but damn Paint wouldn't copy the colours of images properly e.g. pink was green?

So I couldn't make a shiny metal :(
I used the reference picture to copy the colours into paint and I think it looks ok :S

I will make one for you wiht your own skin, that isnt a problem, but i suggest you use a program wiht layer support to create a good looking skin, but its possible that you dont have time to learn that ;)

I know, that's why I said it. Educating you. I often do it to people whose first language isn't English on the grounds that I appreciate it when people do the same for me when I'm learning/using other languages.
