umm,, is that the real story that valve made up? :S
Cuz.. Dr Breen who created the combine was the administrator of Black Mesa before HL2, not over City 17? :

Why'd they come to Earth? Were they under combine control, too?

I believe they were a faction of their own, with their own (failurous) plans to take over earth.

I dont believe a word of that, I would have believed it if Valve had said that, but not some unofficial site.

I believe Nihilanth was responsible for the enslavement of Vortigaunts, why he has collars himself, however, is a mystery to me.

G-Man is aware of Breen's plan and tries to prevent the Resonance Cascade, but fails
Here's one of the main reasons, everything stating the words "gman" and "fail" in the same sentence. Pfffft.

Here's my theory:

Harnessing the loyalty of his fellow controllers, convincing the grunts, and enslaving the vortigaunts, Nihilanth becomes the near-absolute ruler of Xen. Your scientist friends find an interesting material which they decide to experiment on, for reason unknwon to man, its a video, deal with it. Unknowingly it is actually a crystal, rock, or whatever from Xen, and the experimentation causes a portal to open between the crystals original planet (in this case Xen) and Earth. Again, how the crystal got there in the first place, I don't know nor do I care. Moving on. Seeing this as an opprtunity to take even more power than he already has, Nihilanth sends vortigaunts and grunts to Earth, wildlife wanders into the portals with them. At first they do well in nearly conquering Earth (go Xen!) but Gordon Freeman gets a giant arsenal and blasts the aliens away and then gibs them with his crowbar, sending headcrab gibs everywhere that are bigger than the headcrab itself. In order to stop the alien forces alltogether, a scientist opens a portal mechanically and lets Gordon into Xen to kill Nihilanth. He succeeds, and my giant, robotic-butted hero dies, freeing the vortigaunts and leaving the rest without a leader. As payment for their freedom, the vortigaunts offer peace and alliance with Earth. Earth has Xen's back, Xen has Earth's. The grunts and controllers, however, decide to leave the whole Earth thing alone and disreguard anything having to do with humans. Nihilanth is reborn (refer to Redemption) but, remebering what happened last time, conceeds to the alliance with Earth. Which explains why you never see them in half Life 2. However, then came the combine. Their power was even greater than Nihilanth's, and they took over Earth and re-enslaved the vortigaunts, not to fight, but to be used as janitors and guine pigs. Some escape and team up with the Lambda resistance group or help Eli with Black Mesa East. Follow the story of Half Life 2 from here.

I realize this may bring up a few questions, but thats my theory, and I'm standing by it. I still don't know who the gman is, but I do not believe he is capible or failure.

they were once called X-men, but the combine and humanity itself destroyed the mutant race in periods of time. One time, Storm was in the Titanic disguising herself as cyclops who looks like rouge. She saw Gordon on the ship and fell in love with him. He blurted out to the waiter "get me ice". Storm wanted to impress him so she accedentally creates a ice berg right infront of the ship. therefor sinking the Titanic.

Gordon, thinking how he made a ice burg infront of the titanic by saying "I want ice!" (which was made by storm) he becomes a devoted scientist thinking that he might be able to unlock the 3 wishes gig. (a theory made by him) But wheres the best place to find Lucky Charms? BLACK MESA!

In the same time, The humans got so pissed about the titanic incident that factions began to create in order to secretely kill all last Race-X on earth. some factions include: Terrorists, CIA, Police, and the so-called Power Rangers. They killed every last race-x on the planet, led by was Gordon Freeman. (how he was able to study at black mesa and fight of Race-x is unknown.)

But they were stupid, because they killed a race that could possibly stop the combine forces from invading earth. Once again, its Gordons fault:

1) he put in the sample which made the combine's "head" to turn and notice them
2) he launches the Lambda Rocket which creates multiple teleporation storms on earth.
3) he sinks the Titanic
4) he made factions
5) he led factions
6) he made the 3 wishes gig
7) and lastly, he cost a major genocide in earth, using the combine as his "smokescreen"

I may be wrong though. Gordon freeman is a good man. And half-life2 rocks!

heres a few details have come up with. breen isnt really human. he has a human body but it is posesed by an alien. right before the end of HL2 you hear him talking to the alien boss that wants to send him through the portal, and you hear breen answer that the host body could never survive. indicating that he is posessing that body.

Another thing i think is that gordan is like a hitman controlled by the gman. somewhere in HL2 i remember someone saying something about influencing gordan when he was young. meaning they might have brainwashed him and made him a trained killer. how else is a scientist going to kill the masses when all the other scientists die like bitches. another thing that makes me think gordan is somewhat like a hitman is when breen says something about gordons services being available to the highest bidder. at the end of the game the gman confirms this notion when he says something about receiving some interesting offers.

just some of my random thoughts about the game. :)

what breean really says is "a host body? you have got to be joking!" indicating that him taking a host body is an absurd idea, probably because he's human, and as we know, humans cant take over a host body.

its breen again who says that gordon was influenced when he was young. to elaborate on that, he says that he was influenced by isaac kliener and eli vance when he was young and working in black mesa.

I believe the Gman is some sort of intergalactic hamster trying to take control of intelligent human brains such as of Gordon himself to then make him feed said hamster with hunny-bars.

No no no.. Check the resembelence... Check the massive ammounts of evidence.. G-man is Gordon Freeman From the future.. It all makes sense. His whole life goes crazy when the resinense cascade happens so future gordon comes back to try to prevent the disaster but fails. So trying to sort things out again, he traps Corporal Shepard o see if he can help...
Failing again, he realises to only chance is to employ past gordon to defeat the combines in HL2 which prevents some horrible future.
However, past gordon still didnt prevent the resinense cascade so the combines will be back and the x-race are the space time continuum police who are hunting gordon and future gordon and couldnt care less about Earth....

Try that for size

gman is gordon from the future? sounds good but i dont think the evidence quite matches. i am sticking to my guns that breen's body is controlled by an alien. think about it. the combine wants earth to completely give in to their wishes, so what do they do? they posses a human to tell the people on earth that its ok to give in. the only problem with that is breen says at one point that he can make any deal he wants with the combine. indicating that he is not one of them. maybe there is another alien race that the combine hired to take control of breen.

another thing, i bet you anything gordon is frozen between missions. you want to know how i know that? its of course because of the massive load times between levels. not really.... remember how the gman walks out of the room at the end of the game? i bet he leaves gordon there in the freezer until the next game. if you think about it the gman makes it sound like gordon has no idea that any time has passed at the beginning of the game and has to give him a small intro to whats going on in the world. not that he wants to imply that hes been sleeping, but wake up and smell the ashes...

Personally, I believe the whole HL and HL2 experience is a virtual reality simulation for Gordon Freeman, who is a physicist but training to become an elite soldier.

GMan is a guide program inserted into the training program to guide Gordon's training. That's why the program can "break" and stop time. It's kinda like "The Matrix" and "Total Recall".

Every single character in both games are just simulated experience generated by a supercomputer. Through the whole time, Gordon is just strapped in his VR chair.

Actually, then he says something about "well, if that's the only way", followed by "he's right behind me; shit".

Is this right?
I mean,, is this the real story part of the black ops

Once, I was at a HL fan site (cuz I'm a bit of a fan.. :P )
and I wondered what the black ops did in Black mesa.
They said: they are special forces, hunting down alien race-X.
Then I asked; why are the grunts shooting at them then? :P
Then they said:
There was a misstake.
Some of the grunts opened fire at the black ops, cuz noone told them about the black ops. That was why one of the chapters in OP4 was named: "friendly fire"
And that was the place when you first found maniacs from the Black ops, and they where shooting at you..

Is that the story (not the whole story, just the black ops part)

***
i think, Gman is a disguised alien with some cind of a magic remotecontroll so he can teleport aliens from earth to Xen. :P

Unless...he got some cosmetic recipe from Michael Jackson.

You are aware that G-man is short term for Generic man right?

Generic man is a governmental term given to person who may or may not be a government representative. They are everyone whilst they are no-one. etc. etc.

Not bad as a time-line, but the part about the satelite you launched being a device to control the portal storms. I belive it was infact used to target the giant teleporter you used to go to xen near the end of the game, which is why the scientist you met just before "Blast Pit" told you to launch it, because the science team would need it to "get this whole mess under control." unless that scientinst was infact some evil agent of the combine... no, couldn't be, could it?

The G-man is an enigma, much like the smoking man from the X-files, you don't know who he works for.
