WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THEIR EYES!!!

Sitting at the computer for days trying to map really causes some pain in the long run.

True, color depth is better with CRT's, but LCD's are much better for the eyes (and desk space). LCD also saves energy costs.

I want to stick with ATI (instead of GeoForce) when I upgrade my graphics card. What do you guys think I should get (best bang for the buck)? I don't want to spend an exorbitant amount just to get the latest and the fastest.

Currently, I have a Radeon 9200 with 128 MB.

ATI all the way! I would buy an ATI R9800 if I had $229.00.

CRT radiation isn't really as bad as people say it is. I stared at a CRT for 36 hours with no side effects (not even a headache).

Toms Hardware is quite good site to see what cards are good and what crappy.

I actually ordered a Connect3d 9800Pro but they told me to wai and so i did. FOR 2 MONTHS! i got pissed and complained cuz it's not supposed to take 2 months just to have a Gpu delivered.

So they sent me the Excalibur 9800Pro which is much better due to the huge fan that's mounted on it. so i'm gonna overclock it :)

Btw, the 6600GT is a very good card too

It's possible with an nForce 4 based AMD board. And I think theres a Intel Xeon workstation chipset that supports SLi too.

My Dad just bought a brand new computer:

AMD Athlon 64 3400+
Radeon 9800 Pro
A gig of RAM
200GB hardrive
etc. etc.

He plays HL2 and Doom 3 and whatever on it, so I'm stuck with his:

Pentium 4 2.53 mhz
Radeon 9700 pro
A gig of RAM
160GB hardrive
etc. etc.

Life is hard. jk jk

Pentium III's are pretty good, depends on the revision though. Coppermine's aren't that good, but the Tualatin based ones are nice. Pentium M's are based on them too, and they have incredibly short pipelines. A 1.4GhZ Tualatin based PIII would easily own a 2GhZ Pentium 4 (Pre-northwood). But sadly, they overclock like shit because of their short pipelines.

I understood nothing of that... I don't get into the tech stuff much, my Dad has money, does research and buys the computers, he gets the best of whatever he can afford... I don't complain.

Err, that included no techinical at all except from the last sentence.

Pentium III = Processor.
Coppermine = An early Pentium III revision.
Tualatin = A later revision.
GhZ = Measurement of frequency and commonly CPU speed.
Overclock = Change frequency of CPU higher than specs.
Pipeline = One of many circuits in a CPU die.
Die = Semi-technical term for the core of a transistor circuit.

It was the terms "Coppermine" and "Tualatin" that lost me... I understood the rest... and you think that if I spend any portion of my time on a hl mapping forum that I'd at least know what a pentium III is, or GHz are.

theyre just names given to that version of the processor
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-16 22:42:04 UTC Post #91140
Mine just says "Family 6 Model 11 Stepping 1" whats that mean?
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-17 06:59:13 UTC Post #91169
Uhh, the version of the processor is also known as the core name, depends what detection program you use for it. Try detecting it with CPU-Z (www.cpuid.org). Your version should be listed in CPUZ as the Core and will be the 1st column on the second row of information.
