Would appreciate comments on price/performance, general comments on mobile chips. Going to be getting a laptop very shortly. So far the two most likely on an approximate budget of the high five-hundreds (fairly likely to rise a bit) are:

• An Intel 2.8 Cel
• An Athlon XP-M 2800

(N.B.: budget won't be <ahem> including any software)

Any (worthwhile) comments appreciated, especially from hardware laddies.

I prefer the Athlon XP, It's like Ferrari compared to Celeron imo
(Well, No experience of Celerons @ Laptops)
GFX Cards.. Argh, How can they even sell that kind of shit.. Well, You can always buy a new gfx card. (Expensive though)
I recommend that you should buy one with 80gb HD or bigger, 40gb is too small

btw, It's pain to see what people are buying, 'cos I know that I've gotta stay with this crappy thingie for long long time

Get the Athlon. It's a far superior chip to the celeron. But, that thing has shit graphics and a tiny HDD, so I'd look for an XP-M based laptop since XP-M's are rather cheap, and put some decent graphics and a decent HDD into it. Although, personally I'd take a Pentium M Dothan or an AMD 64-M (Mmm, they overclock very well, just like the original XP-M!).

Good good, I was thinking decidedly along AMD lines myself, if only because they're still slightly the underdogs :).

I'm well aware the graphics are practically non-existent there, but the main aim is to get my family outta my room all the time. I'll get a better one if I can wangle it for when my comrades come 'round so we can LAN, but getting m'own PC back properly is more important.

get a laptop with a cheap graphics card. even something like the 32MB Mobility Radeon 9000 (what ive got) will work better than having intergrated graphics. it wont cost much more and you can OC the 9000's easily without without producing too much extra heat.

also dont get the celeron. the pentium M's and P4's as well as the AMD's perform much better.
