I'm making my first map, just a tester, and i've put in some water using the water tutorial on the site. However, it looks like this in game:

<screenie>

But it works fine when i'm under the water.

Anyone know what's going on?

If you have your water_lod and you cubemap, then it means that you're not running VIS. Water will look like this if you do not run VIS when you compile

All sides must be 'nodraw' except the top. Also, use cubemaps and water_lod_control to help.

The water tutorial on this site is for HL1 - afaik, HL2 water doesn't need to be func_water. :/

yeah just make a brush to be your water volume and cover all sides with the toolsnodraw texture, then open up the texture application tool (shift + a) and apply a water texture to the top. you should also put in a water_lod entity somewhere in the map, it doesnt matter where. Also put a env_cubemap entity in the middle of your water about 64 units above. Make sure you running all the comp programs (BSP, VIS, and RAD). when you get in game type buildcubemaps into the console.

Make your cubemap affect only the water face.

I take it I do that by right clicking the cubemap, then properties, then brush faces, then selecting the water face?

If you don't need func_water then why did they put it in?

Wait a minute, i just looked at the picture and thats a leak!

The water is outside the map and it leaking into the void!

Make it smaller or put a box around the water area!

Legacy Support. I say no more...

Not necessarily. RAD has run as one can visibly see shadowing in the image so it's obviously not a leak. It's just a HOM effect caused by not setting up the water properly. Add a water_lod_control and a cubemap with the brush face set to the top of teh water one, make sure it's not an entity, and that it's covered in NODRAW.

I noticed that it creates a default water_lod_control if you don't put one in.
