This compo is a little different to those before, as it basically gives you a free choice in what you wish to do. Different people wanted different themes, so I decided on one that could incorporate a host of different ideas.

The basic premise of this compo is that you are to create something unique in the Half-Life engine. This could be anything: From a original intro map, a new or rarely used style of graphics, or a stunning new effect. It could even be an entity setup!

Your creation, however has to be UNIQUE, not something that we've seen countless times before. You will be assessed on the originality of the creation as well as the attention factor: make sure it grabs our attention!

If you have any concerns regarding what you can or cannot map, either email me (ascarcella AT gmail DOT com), talk to me on IRC, or post in this thread.

You have the usual month to come up with the goods. I, and I'm sure the other judge(s) are looking forward to the efforts your produce. Good luck!

does very good count as unique? we don't see that very often, and the directions state you want "not something that we've seen countless times before".

"Very good" is not very unique. It must be original. And I don't know about you, but I've seen a plenty of very good maps. ;)

This however is very hard. Originallity doesn't come easy.. what the hell am I going to map..eeer! I heard IEMC is already done.. crazy stuff.

i got something super duper ultra gargantuanly unique, and so it will win the compo. unless someone comes up with something more unique then it, which I don't think will happen

this will be the first compo I enter, which means it will be special for me. I already did some brainstorming and have come up with more than a 12 ideas, the hard part will be to put them in one map.
Does the map need to be coherent or is that a free choice?

Isnt it comp number 12, unless I cant count. + Can I enter a source map for Half Life 2 deathmatch, or is it just the original engine?

contest rules say it must work in the console of HL v 1.1.1.0, so I guess a source map won't do...
There are cool things I could do in source but I guess we can still make a unique map for old HL :)

Well I'm not sure about the compo number and it's defitnately the old HL engine because this site is mainly TWHL not TWHL2 and Rabid or Ant say so above somewhere :/

I guess so, but make sure it has an info_player_start since it will probably be loaded via the game console upon review, and not in a LAN game

I'm really looking forward to the entrants for this compo. I've tried to incorporate a few ideas into one (a while ago, I think it was Vassy that asked for a "Map an Intro" compo. You could do that in this one).

Yep I suggested map an intro. However, I didn't know it had to be COMPLETELY unique...I was gonna do some osprey ride thing. I'll have to think of some better intro.

not everyone has spirit (Pocahontas would disagree with that :D ) and I guess the map has to work with normal HL like they said, the game I think we all have :)

No Spirit allowed AT ALL.

You don't need Spirit to run a Spirit-made map. Mappers need to include the Spirit DLL (and a couple of other files) with the map.

My idea itself isn't too unique, but the idea of BUILDING IT in the HL1 engine is certainly unique. Also, gameplay should be interesting. Hopefully I can think of something else really unique to throw in, just for extra uniqueness. :)
