I just wondering...
Why Half-Life is called "Half-Life"???
Anyone have a explanation???
:P

'Half-life' is the term for the length of time needed for the radioactivity of a radioactive substance to be reduced by half.

But it don't explain why the game is called "Half-Life"... :

Because its set in a physics/chemistry/laboratory based environment, Gordon is a scientist, half-life is a major part of physics, its a play on words etc etc.

It's to do with the science thing.

There is nothing more deep to it than that, oh, and it's a catchy title.

I am guessing they did some serious market research to find the title. Either way, it suits the game.

the game does have alot of radioactive stuff in it so maybe thats why

If we use the half-life theory, a substance can never truly disappear, since it only halves itself at intervals. It just gets really small. :P

An exponential decay curve, in fact, like this. See, the longer it goes on, the less it goes down by, so it never quite reaches nothing (well, I imagine you could argue it does, but hey).

The Greek letter lambda (λ) is also used in physics to refer to wavelength. Plus, it looks like an 'h' and an 'l' back-to-back (maybe they fitted the name around that).

Or maybe they just went on some forums as n00bs asking folks for a name for their new game

I believe it also hints at the fact that the "Combines" are half-living and half-machine/alien. Just look at the gunship and and strider, they're a fusion of machine parts and organic tissues, hence "half-life".

Combine is in HL2. Note that 2 is after 1, so that isn't really a valid reason since HL1 didn't have any Combine.

But Valve may have the idea already when they were making HL1.

If Half-Life is relative to "Chemical Science", "Android Aliens" or is the point between the first and second game I don't know (and probably nobody knows), but I like it... :P

But if the game wasn't called "Half-Life"???
Which name you would give??? :

I would call it "Aliens Everywhere"...

I would call it Ressidence Cascade.

I would call it "Aliens Everywhere"...
But that's not necessarily the whole game...there's beating the military, even though there are aliens everywhere  .

Fine, "Aliens everywhere except for at the beginning, and the bits with the military in, and all the puzzles".

I would call it Freeman

I would have used the name of the second (maybe third) chapter of the game: Unforeseen Consequences
But Half-life is shorter so it's better. I guess there are also titles that they would have never used, like "Once upon a time in Black Mesa" or "Xen invasion" those would have originated poor initial sales :D

I would've called it.... FREE PORN

It'd sell like crazy... ;)

Loffe would have bought at least 12 copies ;)

If it was free, nobody would buy it, would they now?

Or it could be called Half-Nude and have the age-restriction 18.

All 13 years olds would have bought it. ;)

I'd name it "Foreign Oppression" (for HL2).
