My best suggestion is to draw your map out on paper first... what do you think?

Huh!?... hmm, ya sure I think that would be the best way to approach it.. but umm... eeeer... ya.

well how do you start?

Well, ok, all mods start with an idea, some are original, some not, then storyline and plot unfolds. You find people interested, and walla.. you make it work!

I have to draw a lot for homework, but I've only used preliminar drawings for 3 maps. Sometimes having an idea an mapping it right away is a better option, since you can profit from that moment of inspiration

Definetly.

i always draw my schemes out.. mostly because i get my best ideas JUST before i fall asleep, so i keep a PUKKAPAD beside my bed and read it in the morning.

I just put a couple of boxes together on an A4 peice of paper and gradually develop it into a sketch of a map... Bit like The Hunter really and it was him that gave me the idea... (sorry... and thanks...)

Definitly a story line first (Otherwise you get stuck with a cruddy story because you try to fit the story into the game). I write about 2 to 4 storylines until I get the right one.
Develope a theme or mood. Implement playability into the story. Make an overhead map of the storylines setting. Go into the detail with the story and map.
A good storyline is so dog-gone hard to write. Usually takes the most time for me out of everything. A perfect series of stories is so much easy to write than a perfect single story.

thats a really good idea, i suppose you could write a storyline and draw your map before you draw it on the PC.

While I was at school I was moved to a table on my own while my mates laughed at me for being moved just because I called my teacher a hobo... She looks like one and I couldn't help it :P

Anyway while I was on my oen, I just drew a sketch of a map that would be cool. I then started making the first room without any ideas whatsoever.

I eventually made a nice room and started using the drawing in my book to carry on with it.

I am halfway through it and you all know it as de_boshi.

I just get an idea and try to make the main place in the map... e.g bomb target if its de... Then I start creating other rooms or areas next to the place.. The biggest problem for me is dimensions - most often too big, so i always have a few info_player_starts in every area to know, how big stuf should be. When i compile i remove them...

You have never done that in your life!
You've never made a map in your life!
You don't know what an entity is.
You don't know the difference between a map and a mod...
You don't even have Hammer installed.
Hell, you haven't even completed HL without cheats!
Stop. Okay. Either try to learn or stop.

I do the same thing as daubster, with the player starts and whatnot, though I hardly ever write my stuff out on paper first, it's usually just a 1 minute scetch when it pops in so I can remember it later.

Hunter:

A lot of people here don't map!
They just like the community and wish only to talk...
