If there's going to be one, it should be for Source.

I like the idea of 2 compos.

They could alternate indefinatly. I know this is asking a lot from the staff, but it would be a good idea to have a HL1 compo go, and when the timelimit of that one is done, a source compo go (With obvious breather brakes in between). Now that they seem to be expanding the staff, this would be easier to orchestrate.

They would probably let Rabid do the HL2 one :o

The next HL1 competition will be Kasperg's (whoops, not sent him an e-mail yet). If the Source compos start this 'turn', trapt will decide on it (you are a Source mapper, ain'cha?)

oh no! please dont do source! ack! my PC is feeble and HL2 only works by an inch... Its impossible for me to map for it :(

Why not, at the same time, release the same compo twice, one for source, one for HL1.
Half the staff an judge the HL1 ones while the others judge the source ones.

It would be fun to compare the Source ones to the HL1 ones

Anthony: I've mentioned the idea before, I said that the subject of the first Source competition would be decided by the top-place Source mapper from the previous HL1 compo. Either that, or maybe I'll make it ;).

HL1 may be old but in no way is it obsolete. There is still so much you can do with that engine. The HL1 engine was definetly ahead of its time.

It's true (but that was in 1998 :) )
But still, there is so much more you can do with source. I was a little sceptic at first with the trigger system, but now that I know how to use it's a whole new world of possibities. Cryo is right, a machine compo could turn out so much better with the source engine.
Anyway, I've already decided the theme for Compo # 14, and from the moment it's posted in the compo section, that should be your main worry :D

If we do a Source Compo, can it be held whilst the HL1 compo results are coming? I don't think I can map for both at the same time with a time limit, so if they were at different times, then it'd be fine. :)

It's an idea. I'm not sure whether people would get trophies in their profiles for Source, though, without some new stuff from atom, and I don't know whether he'll do that.

Well, we're getting into the age where even people with minimum specs can run Source-based games.

And yeah, Source does have a large prop set, but the trick is mastering brushwork and props together in Source. Obviously Source maps will look better than HL1 maps (Good source maps, that is ;D) but still. Source maps can handle much more brushwork if optimized properly, and look better too.

Do 2 compos, imo. I have been practicing with Hammer 4 a bit, it's pretty damn good (but HL2's textures SUCK, no clean, sterile looking, lab textures).

Meh, I suck at texture stuff. Although, I could port HL1's texes to HL2. I would just need to enhance them a bit, set up their material properties, and make an alpha map, then work out how to use em as materials.

I think if we do a Source Compo, it should be held whilst the HL1 compo results are coming.

That way people wishing to enter both could do so without worrying about making more than one map at a time, and people only wishing to enter one of the compos wouldn't have to wait for the results of the others to come out... if you get what I'm saying... :P

Well, I'd say if it's not properly official (I don't know how atom's code would do if it tried to run two competition simultaneously), then we'd start them up either with the next HL1 compo., or the one after.
