when i try to map using the new version of hammer, its really REALLY slow and keeps telling my i need to turn down the number of Undo's. i turned it down from 50 to 5 and still no improvement. plus random brushed keep flashing like im selecting them when im not. is it my computer or what? please help me fix it, if its its even possible. thanks in advance for any advice!

You need a good computer to handle Hammer. Try closing resource eating programs.

bummer...i assumed hammer 4 would be pretty much the same thing as the previous version. : why would the newer version be so much slower than the other one? i will take your advice tho, habboi. thanks :)

Yeah, it's far more straining. Don't know why, really.

It's gotta handle a lot more this time round: Prop models, larger grid size, high-res materials...

Yeah, but I mean, it's hugely more demanding with a completely empty map. A bit peculiar.

Blame Steam. I do.

Hammer runs slow for me too but only when I'm navigating through an area that we created with a staircase. We made the stairs out of a bunch of brushes so I dont know, maybe the number of brushes onscreen has something to do with it.
Posted 18 years ago2005-06-01 12:40:52 UTC Post #112128
Adjust the clip distance for models and brushes, it helps a lot.
I think the main reason it's so slow is because of the amount of memory needed for the textures/materials.
Posted 18 years ago2005-06-01 12:45:17 UTC Post #112129
Yeah, it's far more straining. Don't know why, really.
It mounts the GCF files into memory for quick access of materials and models. No more extracting!

exactly rabid! and its also the model viewer built into hammer.

bummer, so i guess there isnt a whole lot that can be done to fix it, huh? and i guess Hammer 4 doesnt use the csg program anymore for compiling? thanks guys

CSG is obsolete with Source it would seem.

If your undo levels are low, and Hammer's clip distances are set low, there isn't much you can do, no. Try killing the explorer process and some of your other memory eating processes (You don't get the explorer GUI, but you can always restart it once you're done mapping.)

Something similar's probably present in BSP. CSG is pretty damn fundamental; unless Hammer does it as-you-go.

Why do you blame steam Trapt? What is wrong with steam, I have no problems at all. Steam is much better because I don't have to go onto the web, look for Hl2 updates, risk of it being a virus, getting to the download link and clicking, then says "Please login." It's better! And more secure. If you want to play a game of CS but you find you need to download the latest update, you have to waste time on the net, but steam does it automaticly.
Don't blame Steam

but i dont really get why we have to get and use Hammer 4 thru steam? cuz the only way we can map for CS:S and HL2 is to first get Steam and log on and download it and everything. wouldnt it be easier to open the program directly thru a shortcut on the desktop like for Hammer 3.4...without having to get online?

You'll get used to it. I tend to forget how long it loads now and think of the sweet map I am going to make inside :D

I second that comment, habboi. It takes a bit but after a while you get used to it.

I love the fact that it sorts pretty much everything out for you. Notice how we've barely had anyone asking how to set it up having ignored every resource out there? God bless Valve.

I have a rather powerful PC - I won't go into specs - but suffice to say it's v. powerful.

Hammer is the only application I have with the ability to seriously slow it down. I'm seriously considering chucking another Gig of RAM in there, just for Hammer.

Hammer 4 eats RAM... :(

It works great on 1gb RAM. I just upgraded from 512 and it makes a big difference.

i already have a gig of ram tho. but i guess it would be a huge difference, esp after upgrading from a 512. i just turned down my clipping distance really low, and its working a lot better.
Posted 18 years ago2005-06-14 10:46:26 UTC Post #114365
I also have 1 gig of RAM, and although it does run well it's not perfect. I'm considering more RAM for it.

(The rest of my PC doesn't need upgrading)

Remember that video cards type and memory effects Hammer also. I have a fairly slow machine (by todays standards) but having 1Gig Ram and 512Mb video keeps Hammer running smoothly.
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-06 14:28:50 UTC Post #119159
will just over 500mb ram surfice then?
Posted 18 years ago2005-07-06 16:22:54 UTC Post #119182
I'm assuming 512?

It works, but it's much more hawt @ 1gb.

256mb DDR works rather fine for me and In Xsi it can handle a rather large amount of polys.

Rabid how did you map with such low RAM? Must'a lagged the hell outta ya or at least made things harder and yet you made Raincheck :o Damn...

It is steam... when I first started out with SourceSDK, it was that way for me. One thing I do is make sure that once Hammer is started, I shut the "Play Games" window. VERC says that window eats the memory or doesn't release it or whatever. Closing it and all the other steam related windows helps.

You can ctl+alt+delete, go to "processess", select steam.exe, right-click it, and set it's priority to low.

I also set the model preview fairly close, so that Hammer isn't drawing a Gordon way away from where I'm working.
