Nice to see some progress.

I stress this though: You still have well over a month, so you have plenty of time to test things out, change things, and add details, etc.

Also, make sure you don't forget about the RPG trap rule. I'm interested to see some good ones. :)

Those big letters actually say "business", by the way, heh. Lazy VALVe.

I hope performance will not be the main aspect to be judged, since it seems this layout has problems regarding visibility (very hard to fix with hints)
It is a good layout for gameplay, dont get me wrong ;) but I want to know my map will not be discarded because the engine can see much more than it should.
Posted 18 years ago2005-08-06 22:26:22 UTC Post #126427
Performance won't be a main aspect, but remember that good performance is always better than poor performance. Know that your map will not be discarded just because of the performance, as it is a very minor aspect for what I am judging.

Hiya guys I'm back from a 2 week surfing trip in newquay and after much consideration I'v decided that it wont be humanly possible for me to finish so as sorry as I am, I have to decided to drop out. Im going on a 2 week drama course in brighton tommorow and I wont be able to complete by the deadline. I will post my map in the vault for you guys to look at, edit, play and do whatever you people do with unfinished maps! So goodbye for another few weeks although I may be round via Internet cafes and such.

Proof that a map can "feel open" with this layout. Of course, areas outside the red shape are inaccesible.

ok, I finished... again. This time with rain! and some other fixes.
screen 1
screen 2
screen 3
screen 4
screen 5

I've tried to make it feel as open as possible so I removed a lot of the doors so there are just open corridors and I removed the turned on screen, not just for seventh but because dynamic lights somehow seem to light the opposite side of a world brush as well as the side facing the light. Which sucks.
Posted 18 years ago2005-08-24 18:28:47 UTC Post #129543
Nice! I still dont know how to make rain work in HL2. I thought it only worked in CS:S...
dynamic lights somehow seem to light the opposite side of a world brush as well as the side facing the light. Which sucks.
Dynamic lights also reduce the performance of a map greatly :zonked:

Very nice. Deadline is approaching quickly, so it'll be nice to see a few entrants being sent in sometime soon.

Well, my entry doesnt make a huge use of the Z axis. I think it interrupts gameflow instead of improving it in this particular layout... I might have to ask you about what I've done with the RPG in case I have to change it... :quizzical:
Posted 18 years ago2005-08-24 23:22:08 UTC Post #129571
PM me about the RPG, describe what you've done and include a screenshot if possible, to give me the best possible idea of whether it is an acceptable trap or not.

Everyone who is entering: don't forget about the RPG trap rule.

Do respawning explosives count as a trap (as opposed to non respawning ones in your map?)
RabidMonkey RabidMonkeymapmapmapfapmap

;o

My trap was an afterthought, I actually forgot about it until I'd finished. And I forgot to make them respawnable. :P

Respawning explosives are obviously a trap, but it's er.... not very original.

I think it's about time to start asking people to help test these maps.

Since this is a deathmatch competition, I'm gonna need some people to playtest the maps, and help me with my judging. I think Rabid is going to be hosting the server which we will be testing on, and I was wondering whether anyone would like to help out with the playtests. If you're interested, let me know either in this thread, by email, or in IRC. People participating in the competition can also playtest, just to see the maps from other entrants, and also to point out whatever you like, don't like, or if you've found a bug (hey, you'll be helping your own chances by pointing out bad things). Every little thing will help me with the judging more than you can imagine.

Also, if you have a speedy connection and would like to offer to host a server (so we don't have to rely on Rabid so much) it'd be very much appreciated.

Thanks. :)

Posted 18 years ago2005-08-30 07:10:03 UTC Post #130848
I was thinking of a weekend sometime during mid-late September.

Time zones are gonna be a trouble though.

Doodle, Captain P, you're both in unless I PM you later on and tell you otherwise, since we can't have TOO many people, the maps are only small. :)

Posted 18 years ago2005-08-30 07:20:09 UTC Post #130849
That's ok.

What do we judge on, bytheway? Just gameplay and looks? Or also creativity with the layout and such?
Posted 18 years ago2005-08-30 08:26:07 UTC Post #130855
Just say whatever you think about the maps! Take a look at the rules, and see who has used them well: good use of Z axis, etc.

Though I'd say looks are fairly (probably the most) important and the gameplay would be fairly similar between all maps.

I'll probably just toss DS up on my box and give someone the RCON from different timezones and let them admin it.

Not enough maps? I would enter but I just don't fully understand plus I don't feel comfortable with it e.g. I don't think there is enough freedom on what you can make but oh well, my loss as they say :tired:

No, a couple people asked for a little extension because of little issues they needed to fix and such.

Should be 4-5 entries, at least.

It's not too complex as it seems, habboi ;]

Essentially make your own version of the level without deviating from the floorplan. You must include an RPG trap and place your own weapons.

(Hate the RPG rule btw :p)

My map might not turn out as good as it could have been since I had to cut down on textures to make it a better size...might also be a pain to set up but at least it'll be entered :D. Originality ftw lolol.

I now have 3 entries. I'm expecting 2 more. :)

Alex, just enquiring about this being Unofficial.... when you do code in the Source competitions, I'm quite hoping you'll be adding this one in the records for it. The winner deserves a trophy and stuff.

and I should be recognised for starting this ;)

Trapt, I'm undecided on that count. That's the only issue. It's not a code thing or anythin', I can add competitions posthumously. On the grounds that people who didn't enter might have done if it was official from the start, and that it'd be a bit harsh on them to make it official at the end. Hmm... well, any complaints from any such members if this were officially recognised?

Maybe you can be a Source competition permanent judge, eh Trapt? :)

I don't think people would have an issue with this, to be perfectly honest. Does it really matter?

Perhaps.... depends on whether I want to enter or not. :P

I'd also like to add that I'm quite pleased with the turnout. 5 entries is pretty damn good for a pretty large project and first competition, I think.
